DH suggested this recently - I quite like it and popped it on our shortlist - what do you think?

I really like it. I think its sophisticated and glamorous; a name to grow into rather than out of. What I mean is, a lot of names are really cute for a baby girl, but turn out to be really soppy for the woman they will become ( Poppy, molly, Belle... Etc!!!) Wink

Vanessa is a great name for a lady! Smile

shrimponastick · 04/10/2012 22:19

Lovely name.

One of my best friends is a Vanessa.

nn Ness, Nessa

squoosh · 04/10/2012 22:50

Shoulder pads, filofax, hot shot city boyfriend called Jeremy, nouvelle cuisine for lunch, hangs out at winebars, favourite band is Huey Lewis & The News :-)

Having said all that I actually really like it, love that it's such a womanly name. Streets ahead of the Evies and Millies.

DIddled · 04/10/2012 22:51

:) I like it lots :)

YouMayLogOut · 04/10/2012 23:05

I like it.

AnAssumedIdentity · 04/10/2012 23:07

Wow - I like it too but possibly didn't realise it.

ParrotTulip · 04/10/2012 23:08

Not keen. Difficult to spell.

MarjorieAntrobus · 04/10/2012 23:18

Lovely. Easy to spell.

trikken · 04/10/2012 23:20

Love it. great name.

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 05/10/2012 00:22

Difficult to spell??

It's a glamorous, sophisticated name. She will have great hair, good dress sense, be popular and gregarious BUT you will almost certainly have to buy her a pony. Then a bigger pony. Then a horse.

onyx72 · 05/10/2012 00:32

Feltz

blue22 · 05/10/2012 07:26

I love it. Was on my list for dd2. Also had Lara, Anneliese and Rosanna

Ham69 · 05/10/2012 07:32

And it was all going so well, onyx Grin!
Apart from the vile Feltz, I have really good associations with the name.
I had a couple of lovely friends called Vanessa in the eighties and nineties. One of the only names from my school era that could work, I think.

imustbepatient · 05/10/2012 11:11

I hadn't thought of this as an option but definitely like it too. Hmmm...

nasara · 05/10/2012 19:48

Thanks for the input - it's definitely a strong contender! My other top favourite is Thalia - but that's a whole other thread...

BoyMeetsWorld · 05/10/2012 19:50

Not keen. Prefer Veronica.

NulliusInBlurba · 05/10/2012 19:57

What's occurin'?

Sorry, just been watching too much Gavin and Stacey.

It will change your opinion of Ness for ever.

PS. Thalia is a chain of cinemas and bookshops in Germany. Pronounced ta-lee-ah. How would you say Thalia?

SundaeGirl · 05/10/2012 19:59

LOVE it. Gorgeous.

I like Tessa too.

Cezella · 06/10/2012 02:02

The only Vanessa I know has a daughter called Thalia! I think Thalia is beautiful by the way, and Vanessa is a name that I don't think will ever date! x

deleted203 · 06/10/2012 02:04

I like Vanessa. And I went to school with a girl called Thalia (and for a long time I thought her name was Failure cos that's what it sounded like.

OrangeLily · 06/10/2012 02:26

Iv met a Vanessa called Vinessa.... Please don't do that to your child

manicinsomniac · 06/10/2012 09:45

I like it and have only ever met 3 in my life - one that I went to nursery school with in 1987 and two Brazilian children. So definitely don't think it's a common UK name.

nasara · 06/10/2012 19:50

The thing with Thalia is that I want to pn it tah-lee-ah, which I realise is probably an Anglicised pn?

I love Gavin and Stacy! The whole Nessa thing wouldn't put me off tbh.

AgathaTrunchbull · 06/10/2012 20:06

nasara: no, Tah-lee-ah is the correct 5th century Attic Greek pronunciation (aspirated theta). Comes from the Greek infinitive 'to flourish'. Muse of comic poetry. Alternatively spelt Thaleia.
