Why do some people not like this name?

I really like the name Millie but have noticed it doesn't seem very popular in some quarters on this board. Can someone let me know why this is? Is it just a personal taste that people don't like it or is it perceived as so-called 'chavvie' ?

I don't want to give DD a name that is looked upon negatively or will sound dated quickly. Please be honest as I'd really like to know!

Also is Millie very popular and how many Millies do you know?

Millies are across the board Liz.

Its about the only thing here that is :o

AnAssumedIdentity · 02/10/2012 13:38

I agree - I think it is quite a classless name that under normal circumstances I would love. But I'm from Belfast so I couldn't use it...........

Sorry, our locality is drenched with Millies, at least in the age 6 bracket. Amelia, Emilia, Milly, Millie and Minnie in a class with only 10 girls! Which subjects the poor children to be known as Millie-T or AH-melia all the time.

It is a pretty enough name but has been subject to a bit of a rush of popularity recently (across the board), which is probably what's made you think of it. You could probably find an equally pretty name which was a little more unusual. Emily a good suggestion. Annie?

Millie, along with Tilly, Ellie, Evie, Poppy, Alfie, Archie, Billie have been 'fashionable' names that have surged in popularity and are likely going to fall out of favour as people look for more 'solid' names imo.

People may therefore dislike the name because 1) it is so widely used already and is a little 'dull' and 2) it is starting to feel a little 'dated'.

sonniebonnie · 02/10/2012 14:15

But, as others have said, we all have different tastes and opinions and there must be some people who still love the name Millie! Choose what YOU want!

AlfieBear87 · 02/10/2012 15:39

OP you should go with a name that you and your partner like, don't get hung up on if it's too popular or too cutesy. She will never get turned down for a job because her name is Millie and not Millicent and whoever said that giving your child a certain name will make you a less able parent to a teenager is ridiculous!!

Finding a name you both like is hard enough, don't make it even harder by trying to please everyone :)

hazeldog · 02/10/2012 15:49

I have on of the cutesy names that are popular now. It may have suited a little girl but I've never felt it fits me as an adult but the long form of it sounds very formal so I keep to the short form. Cutesy and girly I am not and I wish my parents hadnt given me such a girly name.

giggly · 02/10/2012 15:55

The problem with these threads are that a load of twats will come on spouting about "thin, unserious, cutesy, fashionable, dull or even plain common" to name a few. But my favourite so far has to be " solid" wtf is a solid name?

For all of you that have thrown Millie to the far flung chav common end of who knows where I shudder to think what you would consider a "serious, fat. not cute , exciting etc name?

16muddypaws · 02/10/2012 16:00

My daughter is called Millie - short for Emilia

GooseyLoosey · 02/10/2012 16:03

2 of them in dd's Yr 4 class - both shortened forms of more classic names.

Personally I think it is a nice name and have never had any negative preconceptions about it.

Hullygully · 02/10/2012 16:03

Have you considered Iphigenillie?

That is much more unusual and yet sweetly pretty.

Viviennemary · 02/10/2012 16:04

I don't like it much. There's nothing about it. It's just a plain boring little name.

CPtart · 02/10/2012 16:30

Because there are so so many about....I know several as you ask.

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/10/2012 16:31

Hully there are 3 of those in DS1's class, it's really overused

Hullygully · 02/10/2012 16:32

Oh what a shame!

Ok, how about Trintignantillie?

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/10/2012 16:33

giggly you can't call people twats these days, much less a whole load of people. They will all report you and yo ass will get banned

16muddypaws · 02/10/2012 16:33

If you like it then go for it - what does it matter what other people think - Emilia Fox is known as Millie to her friends and family I wouldn't say she is chavvie!!

Jusfloatingby · 02/10/2012 16:34

Wow giggly. People are entitled to their opinion. That's the point of these threads.

Personally I think Milly is nice as a nickname, but a bit of a self conciously 'cute' choice for a full name.

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/10/2012 16:34

well I only know one of those, so yes better. Is it Celtic?

Hullygully · 02/10/2012 16:35

It's french, it came over with Les Normans.

Floggingmolly · 02/10/2012 16:36

There will be some people who don't like all names, won't there? Why not this one? If there is a perfect, universally liked name out there, Millie isn't it.

MarysBeard · 02/10/2012 16:37

I know a dog with that name, that would put me off.

EnjoyGOLDResponsibly · 02/10/2012 16:39

Because it's a nickname, it's twee and it will date.

FunnysInLaJardin · 02/10/2012 16:42

really? Bretagne I assume? There are close links between the Celts and the Bretons, and the Cornish too IIRC.

So Trintignantillie on the birth cert and Millie for short?
