After boys' names starting with 'O'...

We don't know what sex DC2 is so we're having to think of both girl and boy names, which is proving very very very hard as we are very short of ideas on either count.

But... I do like Oliver (discounted as too popular) and Otto (discounted as our immediate neighbour's grandson is called Otto, and he visits a lot so feels too close.

So if anyone has any O names please share Grin.

How about:

Oscar
Omar
Oisin
Otis
Orlando
Owen

emsyj · 22/09/2012 21:38

Quite like Oscar but clashes with surname - and I like Owen, that's provisionally on the list.

A good friend of mine had a rabbit called Otis, so it is forever a bunny's name to me. Orlando is much too out-there for me.

PopOozeTheFastest · 22/09/2012 22:23

Sorry, why does the name have to start with an O? As letters of the alphabet go, it's a fairly limited one Smile.

That said, I do like Owen, Oscar & Orion. Possibly October or Oakley?

emsyj · 22/09/2012 22:43

It doesn't have to, I'm just struggling to find boys' names that I like and I seem to like a few 'O' ones so thought I'd try and find some more.

Other suggestions are welcome, but I am very awkward and hate most boys' names!

Oren is welsh for orange!

delilah88 · 23/09/2012 12:14

Orsen, like Orsen Welles? I don't like it particularly. Odin is a name I like.

From Wikipedia:
Odin (play /ˈoʊdɨn/; from Old Norse Óðinn) is a major god in Norse mythology and the ruler of Asgard.[1] Homologous with the Old English "Wōden" and the Old High German "Wôdan",[2] the name is descended from Proto-Germanic "Wodanaz" or "Wōđanaz". "Odin" is generally accepted as the modern English form of the name, although, in some cases, older forms may be used or preferred. His name is related to ōðr, meaning "fury, excitation," besides "mind," or "poetry." His role, like that of many of the Norse gods, is complex. Odin is a principal member of the Æsir (the major group of the Norse pantheon) and is associated with war, battle, victory and death, but also wisdom, magic, poetry, prophecy, and the hunt. Odin has many sons, the most famous of whom is Thor.

delilah88 · 23/09/2012 12:15

Sorry that was a bit messy! Do consider Odin though. I met a man called it and it seemed normal and fun as a name.

youarewinning · 23/09/2012 12:35

I like Owen too! I know a lovely little Oscar.

Oakley is growing on me.

How about using Ollie or Ozzie instead of Oliver or Oscar? You could use them as nn or as actual name iyswim?

YouMayLogOut · 23/09/2012 12:47

I like Owen best of the ideas so far. I think all the sensible "O" names have been mentioned already so will throw out a few starting with other letters...

Ethan
Jasper
Liam
Alexander
Benedict
Aidan
Felix
Vincent
Saul
Maxwell
Dominic
Richard
Samson
Peter
Nathaniel
Matthias
Dunstan
Elliot
Alban
Joel
Gregory
Luke
Miles
Edwin
Harrison
Tristan
Lawrence
Malachi
Nicholas

emsyj · 23/09/2012 12:56

DH suggested Saul this morning - do you pronounce it like Paul but with an 'S'? Confused DH seems to think you say it 'Soul'.... Is that true?

Quite like Felix and Jasper from your list YouMay - there are a few on there that we couldn't use, e.g. Nicholas is DH's name Grin. I also have a godson called Peter, which otherwise would be a lovely choice. Gregory and Alexander are also nice, although not keen on Greg as a short form.

Is Owen a fairly neutral name in terms of class/background? DD has a very neutral name and I think when you see her full name/surname combo you wouldn't be able to 'place' her IYSWIM - Owen appeals to me in the same way. Does anyone know many Owens? I don't think I've ever met one.

my grandsons called oakley hes 2 now Grin

YouMayLogOut · 23/09/2012 13:03

Saul is like Paul with an S.

I guess it would sound more like Soul in some accents (some parts of London?)
