Surname woes. WWYD?

I have a really long surname, the kind that you always have to spell out, and it's interminable. DH also has a long surname and it's double barrelled (each word being not so long by itself but together they're a real mouthful). (I kept my own surname). So when I have a DC or DCs I'd like them to have one of DH's surnames, namely the first one- it's short and sweet. I don't want them to have the same issues I have had or DH has had with a long hard to spell surname. So say I'm X and DH is YZ, they would be Y.
WWYD? Do you think it would create endless confusion? Trips and forms and so forth?

Well dd does have a different surname to me and I've never had any problems

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 20/09/2012 20:32

In this case they would match neither parent's completely.

DB, his wife and her son all have different surnames, and lots of problems, particularly with airlines (they live abroad and fly a lot) and hospitals.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 20/09/2012 20:42

So do they end up carrying copies of birth certs?what sort of problems could it cause?
(Not surprised but curious as I'm merely speculating)

Choose a new surname for all three of you. Perhaps the short form of DH surname, or something entirely different.

lurcherlover · 20/09/2012 20:50

Yes - I would just use the first bit of Dh's surname for all of you. Change it by deed poll.

SilkStalkings · 20/09/2012 20:57

Oh yes make up your own new surname for the whole family! Like in Skullduggery PleasantGrin

AndWhenYouGetThere · 20/09/2012 21:15

Can you claim one part of DH's surname too? He could drop part, or keep both, but at least you would all be similarly named.

pixiestix · 20/09/2012 21:18

My friend always has trouble with Jamaican customs - her son is half-Jamaican and has his dad's surname. Don't know if other customs officials are similarly troublesome!

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 20/09/2012 21:28

AndWhen have thought of doing that. Expediency will trump feminist reluctance in that case!

DB and his wife have both had trouble flying independently or together with her son. Need letter from the boy's dad, proof that DB and SIL are married, that SIL is his mother, all sorts, seemingly a different proof every time.

A friend of mine and her DS (but not DD) have different surnames (DS has his dad's, DD has hers. Strikes me as odd giving siblings different names. Mum and dad married for years) - she had to prove that she was his mum when she took him for a routine appt at the hospital he was born in. I didn't change my surname until i was 5 months pg with DS (first baby)- when he was a 17 months old we had to go to A&E. "What is the child's name" , "George X", "Are you his mother", "Yes", "What is your name", "Mildred X", "Go through".

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 20/09/2012 23:17

So either something on the passport or the birth cert should do the trick presumably.
Oh dear- looks like one would have to carry the birth and marriage certs at all times.
You'd think in this day and age..!

My daughter and I had different surnames for about 10 months, until I got married to her dad and took his name - never had any of the issues bikerunski describes, not even with different nationalities (kids currently only have UK passports because I haven't got round to getting them German ones, and I only have a German one).

omfgkillmenow · 20/09/2012 23:30

me and my pal went to Spain with our kids and she got questioned at customs because her kids had their fathers name and not hers..... yes... SPAIN!! I couldn't believe it either!! Choose a new name you all like for everyone.

Badgerina · 21/09/2012 08:48

My son and I have different surnames. We've never had any trouble with flying etc Confused

tabulahrasa · 21/09/2012 09:00

My DC have DP's surname and I don't - it's never been an issue for anything, in fact no-one has ever even checked that I am their mum for anything.

I do get called Mrs DP by school and medical people occasionally, but that's not really a problem.

RillaBlythe · 21/09/2012 10:12

My Dc have their dad's surname & I have never had any problems travelling or going to the hospital/GP with them. Indeed I had a different surname to my dad & he never had any problems with that either.

In your situation OP I'd do YX tbh.
