Boy's name?

Not exactly urgent, what with me being 11 weeks but xDP and I are struggling to agree on anything.

With girls names I am flexible, there are many I like (although he only likes one, which of course I'm not keen on, frankly he is being a PITA!)

I am really, really, really loving William. He hates it and has said 'no'. I don't have another name I like, at all. I was like this with DD, had several girl names but couldn't settle on a boy's name.

xDP likes Matthew, Mark, Luke and John Hmm and Daniel.

There is nothing wrong with these names but they have no special meaning to me, they do not spark a reaction in me.

DD's name is Alice, I love it and it is so special and it is the name of my favourtie childhood book/film as well as a book that I adore as an adult (A Town Like Alice). It is also, in my opinion a truly lovely name.

I need to feel that for the boy's name we settle on too. William has family connections as well as being a good, robust name that could be shortened (although not to Bill or Billy) should we chose to.

Basically we are both stubborn as hell. However, he is just picking names that are biblical (even though he isn't a church goer) and frankly, that shows no thought (were he very religious, I could perhaps understand him a bit more)

Rarrrr.

Of course, we will be finding out the sex and I just know it will be a boy and xDP and I will be at loggerheads (in a friendly way, very amicable split, but even so!!)

Wink

A 7 year old I know is just called Will - not William, just Will, and a friend of mine just had a baby Billy (full name is William). I really like it.

You'll be fine - I couldn't think of a single girls name that I liked, and I was so glad when LO turned out to be a boy!

CPtart · 19/09/2012 13:09

My second DS middle name is William (his first is Luke!) -I love it. First DS is Adam (yes, biblical again!)
William is quite popular at the mo though although that may not bother you. Variations in the playground include Will and Billy. There are several.

Others on our shortlist included
Zachary, Evan, Dominic, Edward.

William is a great name.
Other things you might both like:
Reuben
Gabriel
Joseph

Thanks for the replies. I love Will, which is why i like William - I suppose it is a very popular name and that would be my only draw back.

I love Edward, but that is my cousin's name and as we are a close family, I don't really want to do that (although I may test the water with X to see, without mentionign the family connection )

Zachary - another name I like but it was a name discussed with another X many moons ago, it reminds me too much of him and as he was a prat, I don't think I could insult xDP by naming his child so (weird how my brain works haha!)

Oh, I can only assume I am yet again having a girl and my intuition is spot on - there are so many lovely boys names out there, but none feel right.

ooo, Joseph.

I like that name.

I have a godson called Josef, but it wouldn't bother me using that name.

xDP liked Joshua, but there are soooo many of them in our area (DD is friends with 3!)

I don't think he would go for Reuban, in his reet Northern ways that could be viewed as 'a bit posh' Hmm and Gabriel, I like Gabe...not sure on that, but again it would be ruled out as being arty farty.

Seriously, this is what I am up against!!!!

Well Joseph is lovely and all the grown up Joseph's I've met have been great. Joey is a cute nickname!

BrianCoxIsUpTheDuff · 19/09/2012 13:18

FWIW, the other names I like are:

Henry (love it!)
Harry (far too popular right now though)
George
Elliott/Elliot (whichever the correct spelling is)

My far-out name is Brody, but apparently it is Gaelic for mud or bog, so that's that one ruled out Grin

OMG - Joey!!! Joe is cute too. Also stands up as an adult name - I like names that can be changed and moulded to be age appropriate.

I knew you lot would come up with the goods!

it's my 12 week scan on Monday so I will test out Joseph with him..!

Great! Also Joseph is international which is really good (as evidenced by your little friend Josef)

mayanna123 · 19/09/2012 14:20

The only downside with William is the (imo) inevitable Willy playground teasing.

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 19/09/2012 14:41

William is a good name imo. It's ds4 middle name.

Gwennan · 19/09/2012 14:52

You like classic Royal names like William and Edward; he likes classic Biblical names like Matthew and Mark. Your tastes aren't actually that different so it should be - at least in theory! - easy to find some common ground.

For you, I suggest:
Aaron
Alexander
Amos
Barnaby
Christopher
Dominic
Ellis
Francis
George
Gregory
Henry
Hugh
Isaac
Jasper
Joseph
Julian
Louis
Nathan
Nathaniel
Nicholas
Patrick
Rupert
Timothy
Tobias

What about Benjamin nn Ben? I think similar to Will

MrsJohnDeere · 19/09/2012 15:06

Will/William is perfect. Just work on persuading your dh. So many variations on the theme that you could use.

DancehallDaze · 19/09/2012 15:39

William may well get called Bill or Billy. You can't control what nicknames or short forms get used - your son might prefer one of these versions himself. So if you don't like Bill(y), choosing William is a risk.

BrianCoxIsUpTheDuff · 19/09/2012 19:06

oh, so many names - thanks!

I don't know why but 'Bill' is an old man's name and 'Billy' reminds me of Eastenders (which I don't even watch anymore!) Whereas 'Will' is a bit cooler.

Ben/jamin is my godson's name and my cousin's name - also, not a favourite, another very common (as in widely used) name. But then, most of my choices are arent they!

Gwennan I hadn't clicked that I am after a Royal name - even though it is blatantly obvious, having now had it pointed out Grin

I may just have to stick to my guns, play the "I carried your baby, I nurtured it, I kept it safe in my body and I went through child birth (a section actually, but major abdominal surgery will hold sway I'm sure), so I deserve to name our squishy bundle of joy".
