Which spelling do you prefer/which would you use? Why?

I like Sylvia just because I think it looks nicer

DawnOfTheDee · 18/09/2012 15:57

Sylvia definitely.

Silvia just looks like you didn't know how to spell Sylvia imho...

goingtoofast · 18/09/2012 16:02

Sylvia

Silvia looks like a brand name.

MrsJohnDeere · 18/09/2012 16:07

Sylvia.

Silvia looks wrong, like the name of an ointment.

badtime · 18/09/2012 16:09

I prefer 'Silvia', as it doesn't seem so dated. I really like a lot of continental-sounding names, and this is one that is pretty easy for British people to deal with.

Minty82 · 18/09/2012 16:09

Sylvia, because that's how it's always been spelled in English, although it's Silvia in some other languages...

2beornot · 18/09/2012 16:10

I would go with Sylvia unless I had Spanish/Italian background.

TudorJess · 18/09/2012 16:51

Sylvia

RobinSparkles · 18/09/2012 16:52

Sylvia.

ComradeJing · 18/09/2012 16:52

Sylvia. Beautiful name.

CorrinaCorrina · 18/09/2012 20:34

Thanks for the replies - Sylvia a clear winner!
It's what we thought too but was just having a last minute wobble :)

Yes to Sylvis concencus. It's a lovely name. Will you nickname Sylvie or use the whole thing?

squoosh · 19/09/2012 10:42

Sylvia. Love this name.

Silvia reminds me of Silvio Berlusconi.

CorrinaCorrina · 25/09/2012 11:44

Thanks - birdofthenorth - I think we'll use the full thing mostly.

I am still feeling a bit unsure Confused - the Shakespeare connection makes me want to choose Silvia. Then again I agree with you squoosh about the Silvio Berlusconi thing!

Any other thoughts much appreciated - do you think Silvia would constantly have to spell her name in this country?

twinkletwinkleoldbat · 25/09/2012 13:18

Aww....our dd was nearly a Silvia, as her sister has the name of the other female character in the Shakespeare play! We went with Sylvie in the end as she just looked too much of a scamp to carry off an elegant name like that. I still love it though!

lollystix · 25/09/2012 22:46

Love Sylvie - much more than Sylvia. No to silvia IMHO

delilah88 · 25/09/2012 23:03

Sylvia over Silvia - I love this name!

mathanxiety · 26/09/2012 00:22

I knew an Italian-Irish Silvia and on quick glance her name looked like 'saliva' to a lot of people -- enough for her to wish her name was spelled with the Y.

Sylvia much better.
