What do you think?

I really like it too but probably partly because it's got sentimental value for me as a family surname that's died out through marriage.

I think Beck is a great name, especially as a nickname for Beckett.

I've never heard it as a name before but think Beck would be a cool name for a boy - easy to spell, pronounce and not overused. So, why not?

I like it. A friend on Facebook has a son called Beck. It's cool.

No. Why not pick a real name?

Beck/Becks to me is a nn for Rebecca.

I suppose people would think you were fans of the singer perhaps?

Sounds very nick name like to me, I'd not like it as a full name personally, and Beckett to me is not a name, the only association I'd have is with Samuel Beckett the poet/playwright or perhaps Thomas Becket the murdered Archbishop.

But then I know that people like using surnames as first names (I know some children with what I think are very odd names like Tanner and Cooper) so perhaps it would be just accepted as mainstream now.

I really like it. It does make me hum Beck songs in my head, but that would only be people of a certain age...

I looked at the headline in most active and looked because I wondered what you meant. "Beck for a boy" was it a spoof post? "shall I give my baby a becks", "my baby has been born with a beak", "my baby got pecked", etc..

It isn't a name; it's daft - if the lad is a clever boy and ends up as a doctor or a lawyer, or governor of the Bank of England, don't you think it might be a bit of a handicap?

Love it. Makes me think of the singer.

I know a little boy called Beck, really suits him. He is only 4 so really young. Go for it if you like it :)

No little girls are called Rebecca these days so he will unlikely grow up being confused with a girl - certainly less so than a Sam, Alex or a Morgan.
I have never heard of a singer called Beck and wonder whether many kids would.
Beck is a fine name IMO and people would soon associate it with your ds.

No. If he's already ended up being one of these oh-so-wonderful and exalted professions (or... a HIGH COURT JUDGE), then his name cannot be seen to have "handicapped" him can it? Hmm

Or are you suggesting his name will prevent one of these rosy futures from happening?

My advice for any Mumsnetter wanting to give their little darling an advantage along the path of life? Call them whatever the hell you want and make sure they go to public school. THAT is how people become doctors, lawyers and high court bloody judges.

Why on earth would being called Beck or Beckett prevent one from becoming a doctor? Or lawyer? Shock Confused

lisaro I'm fascinated. What do you mean by a "real name"? All names at one time meant something other than they do now.
Even 'John' means "Graced by God". And Mary's original meaning is "bitter"!

Thanks for all the responses, I expected a 50/50 split (as in our house) but there seems to be more approving noises than disapproving!

I'm most pleased no one has even offered up the "Beckham" association. That was the bit I was worried about most.

Married You might be interested to know that amongst previous Governors of the Bank of England There are:

2 Gilberts, a Beachcroft, a Stamp, a Merrick and a Delillers.
The current holder of that position is of course Mervyn

The forenames the parents of future High Court Judges gave their offspring don't seem to be auspicious either, amongst the (very ordinary) John, Brian, Stephens etc there is Jeremy, Roderick, Colman, Peregrine, Adrian, Lloyd, Vivian, Ross, Rabinder and Guy.

@ Titty Grin

No one ever says:

"No! Don't call him ***, he'll NEVER be a rock star/pro skater/performance artist/graphic designer with that name!"

It reminds me of Scientology too, as Beck the musician is big into Scientology. I was surprised to learn that.

A definite no to Beck. It's horrid. And it makes me think of the musician and David Beckham.

Thanks for all the responses. It would seem a redundant topic now as we've just done the scan and it's a girl...now, where's that baby name book?
