Thora

Love Thora

PopOozeTheFastest · 17/09/2012 23:38

Ada
Ivy
Frances

My grandmothers would be amused that their names are seen as "cool" again now - Nora & Elsie Smile.

Devora

Is Kay really a "granny" name? The only one I know is in her 20s ..... I don't associate it with any generation in particular, don't think it's ever been especially popular?

tethersend · 18/09/2012 00:35

DD2 is Shirley.

Do I win £5?

mumnosGOLDisbest · 18/09/2012 00:54

My name's on here and i'm 34. Not a granny but too old for a granny name to be back in fashion :(

janji · 18/09/2012 01:59

Friend recently called her new dd Nora.

birdofthenorth · 18/09/2012 08:30

Loving this thread. MsGee unless your DD is Maud (fab name) I know babies with all the other names in your list -including two Elsies, two Bettys and two Nells!

JollyToddler · 18/09/2012 08:34

There is a place in NE Scotland called Maud. The locals pronounce it something like Mad. I can't see it making a comeback here!

Neither will Pearl which is pronounced Peril in doric.

Agnesinroom25 · 18/09/2012 08:34

My niece is on her way right now and she is going to be Elsie.

blondiedollface · 18/09/2012 08:35

My DD is called Ada, after my great-great-grandmother (b.1886), just ADORE the name, and we've always had a family naming tradition :)

Devora · 18/09/2012 10:03

I know a couple of little Adas. I think it's up on the up.

I agree with you - it's a great name.

YokoOhNo · 18/09/2012 10:23

Granny names are definitely making a comeback. I like them, they are warm, easily pronounced and unpretentious.

I've referred to a trend for Granny names in Ds's nursery as "Coronation Street" names. We know an Alma, Elsie, Frieda, Vera and, for grandad names, a Stanley. I love Vera, because my favourite author is Vera Brittain.

BegoniaBigtoes · 18/09/2012 10:28

I LOVE Thora so much I actually wish it was my name - however didn't name DD that because we had something lined up that we both loved.

What about Myrtle, Wilhelmina and Queenie? I love Queenie.

BegoniaBigtoes · 18/09/2012 10:30

Oh and Audrey is also lovely.

simplesimone · 18/09/2012 22:36

Oh dear, my granny's name was Hilda. Pity the poor child who gets that...

baskingseals · 19/09/2012 09:04

What about

Muriel

Yvonne

Barbara

do you think any of these granny names will make a comeback?

Bonsoir · 19/09/2012 09:07

I think many of the names on this thread are not "granny-chic" but maid names. Granny-chic would be Frederica, Vera, Violet.

Stinkyminkymoo · 19/09/2012 09:15

My dd has Winifred as a middle name after her great granny. I love it!

worldcitizen · 19/09/2012 09:22

I agree with Bonsoir Grin

CremeEggThief · 19/09/2012 09:28

I am 34 and I went to school with Yvonnes, Barbaras (the youngest one I know is 23!), Maureens, Gwens, Geraldines, Hazels (2 in my year), Susans, Janets, Janices, Brendas, Lilians, Sheila, Audrey, Lornas, Edwinas (2 in my year), Patricias, Teresas, Kathleens, Sandras and Ellens.

Obviously very different in Ireland!

CremeEggThief · 19/09/2012 09:33

Also, loads of Elaines, Carols and Carolines, a few Rosaliands and Denises, and a June!
