....Freddie...

Originally going to have Frederick, but in reality I just like Freddie & it goes nicely with my chosen middle name (Richard) (my fathers name)

Thoughts?

Yes Yes Yes to MNhoneydragonHQ best ever argument for this.

evamummy how odd, makes me think of Flintstone.

Also, this is not a current trend there are loads of headstones in our local graveyard with Alfie, Millie, Jonny etc on.

Makes me think of Fred from Scooby Doo. Possibly because I've seen so much of it recently Wink

Emmiedarling · 14/09/2012 13:58

No - as i've said - I LOVE Frederick. I just didnt think it matched the middle name... (Richard)

I think those names match and flow perfectly. They seem similar in style to me. How many syllables does your surname have?

But anyway it's personal taste Smile

bigbluebump · 14/09/2012 14:44

Freddie Richard flows better than Frederick Richard, that's true.

However, I personally much prefer the full name Frederick to its nicknames Fred or Freddie. They're find for a little boy but perhaps your ds may want to use his full name when he's older?

Minty82 · 14/09/2012 14:46

I think Frederick Richard makes more sense as a name than Freddie Richard as they're both solid traditional names, and I think they flow better too. But then I'm another diehard 'nicknames should be nicknames' type I'm afraid!

And people with names that shorten do use different variants at different times in their lives, though it's not always the progression you'd expect - I know a Fred(erick) who'd always been known as Fred until he was about 22 when he started calling himself Freddie...

birdynumnums · 16/09/2012 22:49

I would go with Freddie - don't see the point in giving a child a name you are not going to use ever and don't even like. DS1 has the shortened version of his name on his birth certificate because I hated the longer variation and could not ever imagine referring to my cute little baby as such a name whereas DS2 has the full version of his name because I do like it and intend to use it.

Also, it won't sound silly in years to come if he decides to have a professional career - these names will be seen as the norm. Freddie is a lovely name. Not a fan of Frederick - find it a bit stuffy and the only Frederick I know insists on being called Fred.

anamaria22 · 17/09/2012 12:11

Frederick is a lovely name - elegant, charming and manly - not stuffy at all imo.

I too find it strange to name your child a nickname if you hate the proper name...?! Is Fred or Freddie really THAT different than the full name Frederick? Or is Alfie that different to Alfred?! I don't think so and regard them as the same names.

DancehallDaze · 19/09/2012 16:01

Naming a child is a great responsibility and it's important to remember that it will be THEIR name NOT YOURS. So it's fairest to give a name that gives them options as they grow. Name him Frederick, you can call him Freddie and he can use his full name if he wishes when he grows up a bit. Or Fred. Or Rick, even. Or he may be happy to stick with Freddie. But he has more choice.

LuellaLovesLavender · 19/09/2012 16:08

My name cannot be shortened nor can any nicknames be derived from it and AMAZINGLY I survived without having all these great options when I grew up! Call him Freddie if you like it!

DancehallDaze · 19/09/2012 16:20

How you or I or anyone feels about their own name is irrelevant. It's fine if the child likes his name of course, but not so much if he doesn't. And there's no way of predicting that.

LuellaLovesLavender · 19/09/2012 17:23

Maybe we should leave them nameless until they are 18 so they can pick what they like for themselves!! Hmm

DancehallDaze · 19/09/2012 18:39

A very good suggestion:o
