Iona. I used to have a BF called Iona

TudorJess · 10/09/2012 15:18

Sara

jaffacakehips · 10/09/2012 15:21

Iona!

IawnCont · 10/09/2012 15:22

Sara. I also like Iona a lot, but would pronounce it the Welsh way (Yonna as opposed to Eye-Oh-Na)

Leeds2 · 10/09/2012 15:33

Iona

squoosh · 10/09/2012 15:58

Lara, by far-a. Smile

Lara - but then I would.

margerykemp · 10/09/2012 16:04

is sara pr sara like cara or like sarah?

I like Lara as short for Larissa

but I prefer Tara

mejon · 10/09/2012 16:08

Iona prn. Yonna - lovely and underused name.

QueLinda · 10/09/2012 16:35

I prefer Iona, it's very pretty as long as your surname works with it, i.e. not Iona Carr etc.

UnrequitedSkink · 10/09/2012 16:36

Lara

DottyandSpottyWot · 10/09/2012 16:39

Iona

Was at school with one, and she was lovely!

t1meout · 10/09/2012 16:39

Lara was my favourite name but I have suddenly gone off it - not sure why. Sara seems more beautiful and unusual to me - I don't know any small Saras.

Iona is pretty but I know a few.

tigrou · 10/09/2012 18:29

Iona. I would have used that if it was pronouncable where I live

manicinsomniac · 10/09/2012 18:43

Lara then Iona then Sara. Like all 3 though

redpanda13 · 10/09/2012 22:31

Lara because it makes me think of how beautiful Julie Christie was in Dr Zhivago.
Sara then Iona. All nice names though.

firawla · 10/09/2012 22:32

Sara, then Lara

randomimposter · 11/09/2012 11:04

Lara for me - lovely name.

Sorry, at work so need to be brief. Thanks for all your feedback.

Iona, we were planning to pronounce it Yo-na. Is this correct? I think this is how I've heard it pronounced before, similar to Iola and Ioan. We live in Wales, and are both half welsh. I should know this, but IawnCont mentioned that she pronounces it Yonna. She's probably correct. We don't live in a welsh speaking area of Wales.

I am a Welsh speaker, and in Welsh it's always Yonna. It's not a massive difference to Yo-na, but the stress seems more on the n in the Welsh way. The "yon" is like in "yonder". (I hope that makes sense!)
It's great that you're checking beforehand... I recently met someone who'd given their child the lovely name Iolo, but they were pronouncing it completely incorrectly.
"Oooh congratulations on your son! Have you named him?"
"Yes! Yollow."
"Yollow? Gosh, that's nice. And very unusual. Is it Scandinavian?"
"No, it's Welsh!"
"Really... Oh... You mean Iolo!"

:o

Lara has my vote

itsjustmeanon · 12/09/2012 10:31

Thank you IawnCont. Much appreciated.

I think we're preferring Sara, it just seems prettier, and more feminine, without being frilly. I'm glad they all have such positive feedback though.
