Magdalena = assumptions?

Considering Magdalena as a middle name. Question is does it make you assume parents/ child religious? e.g. in future when she writes a CV, would people make assumptions? Or am I overthinking/ do you just think it's a name like any other?!

I would assume you were Catholic with that name & had cultural links with a strongly Catholic country.

Assume Catholic, most likely Spanish/Portuguese.

But it's only a middle name. Middle names are supposed to be a bit odd or interesting or have a history.

Out of interest, how is it pronounced?

I ask because there's a street near us called 'Magdalen St' and my mum always says it's pronounced Maudlin. Would Magdalena be Mag-dal-ena or Maud-lena?

The name itself says Catholic to me btw, prob Spanish.

Thanks all, I thought as much. Herrena, pronounced Mag-dal-ena, but yes I've come across the Maudlin pronunciation in relation to place names too - no idea why that is... ?

Who writes middle names on cv's anyway? Can't remember it being a significant factor when I had to recruit...

I think its a nice name, with catholic/eastern european roots, but I wouldn't assume that because someone has that name (particularly as a middle name) that they are catholic or eastern european.

Magdalene College, Cambridge is pronounced 'maudlin'. I have no idea why - just tradition maybe. I think there's also a Magdalene College, Oxford.

But if you're talking about Mary Magdalene, it would be 'mag-da-leen'.

There's a Magdalen Street in Norwich that's pron. Mag-da-lin, just to confuse everyone!

re pronunciation it seems to be "Maudlin" for Magdalene and Mag-dah-LAY-nah for Magdalena. At least it is how I pronounce my name.

Its quite common amoungst the Afrikaans people of South Africa - although then pronounce maghhh-der-lear-nah. So I'd probably think conservative-type Christian.
