How would you pronounce Oisin?

I know all the books say Ush-een (which I don't like - sounds like a girls name to me) but I've known a couple of people with the name who pronounce it Osh-in - which I love!

DH is Irish and pronounces it the first way but agrees with me that he loves it the second way. All our family is in Ireland (though they will pronounce it the way we tell them!) but we live abroad (in a very international community) and our son is likely to not be living in Ireland as well. DS1 also has an Irish name that is pronounced slightly differently than it is spelt (though much closer and it wasn't intentional!) and it's never been a problem.

So how would you pronounce it? If you wanted it to be Osh-in, how would you spell it? Or are we just storing up problems for ourselves and DS?? We're really struggling with other names we agree on!

Yes I think that is a good way of putting it.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/09/2012 19:07

That's probably it as all my NI relatives seem to say O.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 12/09/2012 19:08

Osh-een

scottishmummy · 12/09/2012 19:11

o-sheen
lovely name

EvenBetter · 13/09/2012 13:01

I'm in the north and pronounce it Osh een

What about Logan, Lorcan, Seamus or Darragh?

mathanxiety · 13/09/2012 19:49

Or Lochlann?

Niall is another good name and not so popular.

wigglesrock · 13/09/2012 19:56

I'm in NI and I saw Uh sheen, but I love love love Lorcan

Crossandratty · 14/09/2012 10:39

I would say 'waz-in', based on having no knowledge of how to say Irish names, and it looks like the start of the French oiseau to me, which is how I'd come to my pronunciation! You learn something new every day!

Barbielovesken · 14/09/2012 10:59

Its definitely Uh-Sheen. I have one (an Oisín) and it drives me stir crazy whenever someone (never anyone from Ireland) pronounces it otherwise.

I think you should call the baby Ocean, if thats what you like/ want him to be called. You never know - when hes older, he may live in Ireland and if so, IMO, with Oisín as a name itll be pronounced right and you dont like it..

3boysgirlontheway · 14/09/2012 11:09

Uh-Sheen, I am in Ireland and that is how we say it where I live. I don't like it, there are so many of them.

mathanxiety · 14/09/2012 15:37

There are names that are more pronounceable:
Ferdia
Setanta
Fergus
Fintan

LemonLovesLilac · 15/09/2012 22:53

Ush een but then I'm from Ireland, I don't think there is too much of a difference between the two pronounciations you suggest!

SummerRain · 15/09/2012 22:57

I've loved in Ireland since age 8 and have only ever heard it pronounced 'o-sheen' with a short o as in 'occupy'

SophySinclair · 15/09/2012 22:59

uh-sheen. From Ireland

MorrisZapp · 15/09/2012 23:01

Omg.

Have just realised that a friend who has a kid called Ocean (which I silently sneered at) actually has a traditional Celtic name.

Peevish · 15/09/2012 23:22

Uh-sheen. Am Irish. Please call your son something else if you don't care for the actual pronunciation, OP - to do otherwise would be like saying 'I'm calling my baby Bob, but we're pronouncing it Ferdinand.'
