our DS was due 2 days ago and we still haven't agreed on names yet!

Current ideas are either Sidney or Vincent - which one do you prefer (and why?).

Or do you have any other suggestions that would work well with a short one syllable surname (starting with J).

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY ADVICE!!!! :-)

If your surname is jones then vincent might not be ideal

I don't mind Sidney.

Sossiges · 09/09/2012 11:49

I see "Sidney" and I think "steak and kidney pie". I'm sorry, I know that's probably not helpful. Don't like Vincent much, either.

LHW123 · 09/09/2012 12:40

Thanks for the honest answers.

It hasn't occurred to me about steak and kidney before. Now that's mentioned, it looks obvious!

Don't worry, the surname's not Jones :-)

We did love the name Elliot but we have a DD called Juliet so we feel that we can't use Elliot now as they sound too similar.

Any ideas for other names would be really welcome. We are only looking for the perfect name that is classic, but not too popular or whacky..... I think post people want to find a name along these lines too....

thank you!

Elijah?

cece · 09/09/2012 12:49

I LOVE Sidney. I wanted to use it but it was vetoed by DH Sad

I also really like Vincent.

How about Victor? I really like that at the moment. Another favourite of mine is Wesley. Oh and Gregory.

I also like Ronnie for DS2 but it rhymed with DS1's name so couldn't use that either.

All of the above were vetoed by DH though.

slowestwildebeast · 09/09/2012 12:52

Sidney just reminds me of Australia, so not a pie. :)

Juliet and Jefferson. :) I'm useless.

SavoyCabbage · 09/09/2012 12:52

I like Vincent better. I think I am put off Sidney because of Sydney being used as a girls name.

I love Victor. It's very strong. Quite swoony.

numbertaker · 09/09/2012 12:55

I like Sidney better, vincent is a big no no for me, Vincent Price, Dracula. And also lots of east end baddies seem to be called 'vince'. If you call him vince you should get him a knuckle duster for a prezzie.

Sid Jones is a good strong name.

Sidney James Jones...i like that.

TellyBug · 09/09/2012 12:59

Stanley?

amck5700 · 09/09/2012 13:40

Miles
Guy
Ivan
Innes
James
Alexander

LHW123 · 09/09/2012 14:51

I also quite like Magnus but OH not so keen. It means big or great and i have a feeling this baby will be big..!

does anyone else like / dislike the name?

All the advice is very useful - I can see that Vincent is a love/hate name and I am not sure if we could go with it after all.

thank you!

... also - we quite like Patrick - although we are not Irish and we don't have any connection with Ireland. We thought it was a fairly 'solid' name that everyone has heard of, but yet does not seem to be used that often.

Do you like Patrick - or is it automatically assumed that any 'Patrick' would be Irish?

OP posts:
amck5700 · 09/09/2012 15:05

Patrick is nice wouldn't immediately assume they were Irish. I prefer Fergus to Magnus. My 9lb 13 baby is Craig (a crag or a rock).

What about Edward, Andrew or William?

NotInMyDay · 09/09/2012 15:49

Patrick is a nice name but there is the inevitability of Paddy to be aware of.

Magnus would never be my choice but I know one and I'm really used to it now.

The problem with canvassing for opinions is that people seldom agree on babies' names. Hence why we are not all called John and Mary.

My advice is to go with what you love. (As long as it isn't cruel).

TudorJess · 09/09/2012 16:29

I like Sidney. Patrick is OK. I know three non-Irish Patricks and it has never occurred to me whether or not they may have an Irish connection.

Hyaline · 09/09/2012 16:37

Patrick is great and I don't think you need to have Irish heritage to use it.

I like all your names except Sidney which I see as a bit like a Alfie / Archie barrowboy name.

I nearly called DS Vincent, though in the end went for Francis.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 09/09/2012 16:38

I like Sid but would just have Sid, not Sidney.

Really like Patrick and wouldnt assume ab Irish heritage.

Also like Fergus, Henry, Travis.

Littlecherublegs · 09/09/2012 18:07

Patrick is nice enough and I think you can past the Irish connection.

Not keen on Sidney or Vincent.

How about:
Dominic
Anthony
Gavin
Stewart
Lewis
Gregor
Shaun
Noah
Ethan

Sossiges · 10/09/2012 10:00

Victor and Magnus are both good
