WDYT? Any connotations or associations that spring to mind? Do you know many?

Lovely! A pretty and flowing name.

Much prefer it to Sylvie, which is quite faddy and not as elegant IMHO.

I think Pankhurst, which is a good thing.

squoosh · 08/09/2012 00:18

LOVE it.

SomersetONeil · 08/09/2012 09:07

I really like it. One of those elusive, non-dateable names..

MolatovBomb · 08/09/2012 09:31

Sylvia is a beautiful name :)

I think of Sylvia Plath, so, good in that she was one of the best writers of the 20thC; bad in that she suffered with bi-polar disorder which contributed to her suicide.

Also Nancy Travis' character in Three Men and a Baby/ Little Lady

Don't let that put you off!!

TheSydenhamSet · 08/09/2012 09:34

Thumbs up!

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 08/09/2012 09:34

Plath

Doomed / horrible husband / motherless children. Too morbid for me.

DefiniteMaybe · 08/09/2012 09:36

I think of my mil as its her name

BillyBollyBandy · 08/09/2012 09:37

I like it, and like Sylvie as a nn

SomersetONeil · 08/09/2012 10:11

If you rule out a name because one person who shared it didn't have a good outcome, then there'd be hardly any names to choose from.

Ignore the naysayers who use this as a reason. :)

OwedToAutumn · 08/09/2012 10:16

I love this name! It's so pretty!

And Sylvia Plath is an important poet (and many poets, painters etc had sad lives) so a good association in my book.

I wish I'd given this to one of my DDs!

Mrsloverlovershabba · 08/09/2012 11:20

My SIL's name. It still sounds lovely to me every time i say it.

MoonHare · 08/09/2012 11:46

I'm not keen. Although it does have the Pankhurst positive connection.

But I just think of a dyed-blonde, late middle-aged woman, working in a chip shop with a fag hanging out of her mouth. The brassy yellow coat in Hi-de-Hi was called Sylvia. Showing my age.....

It does however seem to be enjoying a revival as 'old lady name chic' sweeps the nation though, so I expect it'll soon loose negative connotations and become more modern sounding as nurseries and schools start to fill up with young Sylvias.

Startailoforangeandgold · 08/09/2012 12:11

Sylvia, she's 70+ and still dressed in leopard print and sky high heels perfect hair, nails and make up and she's just as lovely as when I met her last 20 years ago.

She's my Dad's cousin and I couldn't believe how little she'd changed. Her lovely DH sadly has had a stroke and is in a wheel chair.

They are the only bit of my family with money and yet she's still marvellous down to earth Yorkshire woman at heart.

Lambzig · 08/09/2012 12:45

I love it, it was on my shortlist for DD, but DH vetoed.

HistoryNerd · 08/09/2012 17:08

Love this name, its on my shortlist if I ever have a girl.

Really lovely and agree preferable to sylvie which just doesn't have the same style

blueemerald · 08/09/2012 17:38

Love Sylvia and Silvia. The only people I've met with this name are gorgeous, lovely Spanish and Portuguese girls Grin

yes Sylvie is totally different, Sylvia is a bit boring sounding to me, like Lydia etc, the 3 syllables get really drawn out in an unpleasant way in some accents

Lolwhut · 08/09/2012 18:06

Absolutely love Sylvia, I prefer it to Sylvie as I find Sylvie a bit more twee. Both are lovely names though.

It does not sound like a dinner lady or a dentists receptionist name, but even if it did would anyone care?. Smile
