Only if Edward is on the BC.

pixiestix · 02/09/2012 11:22

What Boob said.

Viewofthehills · 02/09/2012 11:22

Gorgeous as a nickname.
Terrible if it's his only name and he doesn't get a choice to use a proper name as he gets older.

lighthousekeeping · 02/09/2012 11:28

Thats what my mum is going on about. My sister does this which is fine for a girl because the names she chose now are names in their own right and very lovely with it.

Im hoping she's just winding my mum up.

I prefer Teddy. I don't see the point of having another name on the BC if you are going to call him Ted or Teddy.
I don't dislike Ted btw.

LondonInBoots · 02/09/2012 11:35

For your nephew I'm guessing from your op? If she INSISTS on not having a proper name, then Ted, its less silly as a proper name.

What about something like Tom, Tim, Leo or Zach instead?

buttercrumble · 02/09/2012 11:38

Teddy is beautiful. I love it for a boy, its my favorite name of all time........

lighthousekeeping · 02/09/2012 11:38

god forbid, I would never suggest names to her!! Honestly I keep out of it but I do want to gently suggest that maybe this time the child shoulc have a more formal real name?

I mean, my best friends child was Billy until he went to school and came back deciding he now wanted to be known as William. Lucky him, he had that choice.

I have just spotted on FB that a friend's cousin has called her son Teddy. Fine now, fine when he's about 65, but it IS a derivative of Edward. Why not just name him Edward and use Ted or Teddy.

(Not a fan of 'short names' as given names)

PopcornCity · 02/09/2012 11:58

Ted is a good nickname for Edward or Theodore. Teddy is a soft toy.

bigbluebump · 02/09/2012 22:29

Teddy is short for teddy bear, isn't it?

LouMacca · 02/09/2012 22:32

I love Teddy but DH vetoed it (Teddy Sherringham) think Ted is great too.

chickydoo · 02/09/2012 22:32

I have a Theodore
We call him Teddy
School call him Theo
He calls himself Theodore

confuddledDOTcom · 02/09/2012 22:36

There was a man who died a few years ago, his name was something like Jonny - his full name, not a nn - his family were not able to (although I should imagine been sorted by now) put a stone on because the cemetary said it has to be a proper name on it! It certainly made me think about names!

Badgerina · 02/09/2012 22:55

I would put Edward or Theodore on the BC.

xmasevebundle · 02/09/2012 23:00

No, it reminds me of theodore bundy(ted bundy)

lj123 · 03/09/2012 08:21

I know a little boy called ted, he is a cutie :)

Flosie1989 · 03/09/2012 08:43

I love Teddy for a name. My neighbours little boy has this for a name and it sounds great

zingally · 03/09/2012 11:52

Ted is okay for a boy but Teddy is utterly appalling. Can you imagine a 40 year old man introducing himself as Teddy?

BackforGood · 03/09/2012 11:59

Ted is OK as long as Edward (or possibly Theodore) is on the birthcertificate so the child has a choice as he grows, but Teddy is short for Teddy Bear, and should not be given to a child in any formal or legal context.

bigbluebump · 03/09/2012 12:35

A 'Teddy' would have a difficult time in many other countries where a teddy is a soft cuddly bear. Well in those countries that I've spent time in (e.g. Germany, France).

Theodore, Thaddeus or Edward (although not sure where the t comes in...) are all proper names imo.

WillowTrees · 03/09/2012 12:44

The teddy bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt. I have a Theodore, but we call him Ted/Teddy, he is never known as Theodore, bit of a pain TBH because on all official documents he is Theodore and I always have to explain that we don't call him that. Ted is a name like any other, I gave him a long name so he had 'options' for when he was older but I see now that that is silly, why would he want to change the name he has always been known as and what everyone knows him as?

lighthousekeeping · 03/09/2012 18:45

That's exactly what my sister says as well.

Ted is fine. Not keen on Teddy or Alfie etc they seem a bit cutesy. I wouldn't say anything you will piss her off, it is her choice.

TudorJess · 03/09/2012 21:58

Most people he meets won't know the teddy bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt though. They'll just think "cuddly toy". Same goes for the girls' nickname Dolly.
