Just browsing name threads for inspiration and noticed that many of you consider meanings behind names.

When I named DS this never occurred to me and tbh I just puck a name that I like the sound if.

How important would you rate meanings in your choices?

Really important for me. DD's name means beloved.

Badgerina · 02/09/2012 10:26

One of the middle names we've chosen for DS2 has a lovely meaning that was the deciding factor for choosing it Grin

ceeveebee · 02/09/2012 10:28

No I didn't consider, I don't even know what the meanings are now

ceeveebee · 02/09/2012 10:31

Right DD is "my god is a vow" and DS "famous ruler". Told you I didn't look into it!
Their middle names have a special meaning to us as they are grandparents names.

minipie · 02/09/2012 11:16

I have picked the name first and foremost because I like it but then once I had a short list I did check the meanings just to make sure it wasn't something horrid.

slartybartfast · 02/09/2012 11:18

yes, but ignored the meaning as I didnt like it

pixiestix · 02/09/2012 11:21

Yes, anything with a meaning I didn't like was struck off the list immediately, regardless of how much I liked the sound.

lljkk · 02/09/2012 11:22

No, never worried about it. DC1's middle name means "lame"! It's very popular name & he's not the least bit lame.

Mine all have one family name & one name we just liked.

slartybartfast · 02/09/2012 11:29

same as my dd lljkk. it did vaguely worry me but I chose to ignore it.

FanjoPingpong · 02/09/2012 11:36

Nope. Most of the original or old-fashioned meanings are unknown or irrelevant today.

amck5700 · 02/09/2012 12:50

ceeveebee - Lilian and Baldric??? :o

NarkedRaspberry · 02/09/2012 12:56

I would have ruled a name out for an awful meaning, but otherwise it didn't bother me.

ceeveebee · 02/09/2012 12:57

amck no! But DS name does end in 'rick' which is apparently German for power?

peanutMD · 02/09/2012 12:58

So glad its not just me, I was wondering if is missed a parenting memo :o

DS name means "will, helmet, protector" apparently Hmm

Good to have options Grin

jaffacake2 · 02/09/2012 13:06

I wish I had thought more about the meanings as DD1 is " beloved princess " but DD2 is "kind herb" !! althought sort of suits her. Smile

Birdsgottafly · 02/09/2012 23:00

Both my last two DD's names were the reason i chose them off my short list.

I connected the middle names to family and their meanings, to tie in.

scottishmummy · 02/09/2012 23:02

yes I considered meanings

xmasevebundle · 02/09/2012 23:07

Yes!!!!!! Futute ds is 'wise' and 'strong'. For my girls name i had was 'much desired'

I always looked at the meaning as some names have the most stupid meanings.

And my ex bf means ' a secluded'

I laughed so muchSmile

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 02/09/2012 23:20

Yes. We picked Irish names for our dds so lots of the meanings are fairly obvious. I didn't want anything that I liked the sound of but not the meaning.

messtins · 04/09/2012 14:21

I'd rule out a name based on a unpleasant meaning - I like Miriam but it means "bitter" Sad
The three names we had shortlisted for DS2 all meant "gift" which he was, but that was a coincedence.

sonnieboo · 04/09/2012 14:31

We avoided only names with particularly negative meanings e.g. Claudia (derived from claudus = disabled/lame), Cecilia (caecus = blind) or Hector (bully, tormentor). Mainly names derived from Latin or Greek words that have obvious negative meanings.

Many names don't have an obvious meaning anyway.

sonnieboo · 04/09/2012 14:33

" 'rick' which is apparently German for power"

No idea where you got that from, but power in German is Kraft Confused.

ceeveebee · 04/09/2012 15:04

Sorry - Rik is Ruler (not Power) in old High German apparently. According to lots of baby name sites. The modern German equivalent is Reich.

ChasedByBees · 04/09/2012 15:15

The meaning was very important. We ruled out a handful of names as they had awful meanings. DD's name means Star which suits her. :)
