Pronounced Eh-la. DS1 and 2 have traditional Scottish names but I'm not keen on many Scottish girl names. What do people think?

I like it. Never heard it before, but my first impressions are that it's lovely!

ExitStencilist · 29/08/2012 21:01

I wouldn't count on many people pronouncing it right. I would have said Ay-la.
Not a fan, tbh.

Stellan · 29/08/2012 21:04

I thought this was a variant of Isla.

I would just spell it Ella...

Margerykemp · 29/08/2012 21:13

I would pronounce it eye-la and think you didnt know how to spell Isla

What about

Eilidh
Ailish
Cartriona
Heather

Whyriskit · 29/08/2012 21:13

It sounds different to Ella though!

Do you mean it sounds like ay la?

Whyriskit · 29/08/2012 21:19

Maybe its an accent thing! I would say Isla sounds like Ay-la while Aila sounds like Eh-la!
This thread may have made my decision for me Smile

Do you mean it to sound aihla (A-la)? Maybe Aidhla would work if you are in Scotland? Not sure...

DowntonOut · 29/08/2012 21:23

Isla = iyla to me.

Eh-la = Ella with emphasis on the eh. (like a thinking pause... eh... Like that!)

If it's ai to sound like "mail" then my suggestion above might work.

DowntonOut · 29/08/2012 21:24

Ailsa? Sorry, I'll stop posting now Blush

Whyriskit · 29/08/2012 21:27

Downton - your suggestion with the d might work, I also have an Alasdair!

What about Vaila? It's one of the Shetland Islands - a girl in Uni was called this and always loved it.
Aila is nice too x

DowntonOut · 29/08/2012 21:32

Oh, I'm glad! Smile

FatimaLovesBread · 29/08/2012 21:49

A relative has an Ailla which is Cornish and pronounced eye-la like Isla.
I'd think it was pronounced the same.

MorallyBankrupt · 30/08/2012 15:45

DD's best friend is Aila. Only time I've ever heard it. Means 'from a strong place' which I like to think means her Mother!

I think it's gorgeous.

MorallyBankrupt · 30/08/2012 15:47

And she says A-La, totally different from Isla.

Napdamnyou · 01/09/2012 15:02

People might think you mean Ayla, the heroine of Clan of the Cave Bear and Earth's Children prehistoric novels.
