I dated a Jonty. Makes me think of the guy on Cash in the attic though.... Hmm As a name outright or as a nickname?

mamalovesmojitos · 29/08/2012 19:24

Short for Jonathan it's nice. Not sure of it as full name. But if you like it then go ahead!

Frontpaw · 29/08/2012 19:33

I have only met frightfully posh Jontys (Jonties?). Has to be said with a braying horsey voice 'Jooooohnteee'. Wouldn't work with a surname 'Smith' though.

Shybairns · 29/08/2012 19:36

If it was an nic name for a Jonathan then yes. I think kids should have options. Especially if parents want to give a child a name they could potentially be mocked for in later life.

HiHowAreYou · 29/08/2012 19:56

I know a nice, perfectly normal Jonty, so although I probably should think it's too super-posh, I don't any more.

Figgygal · 29/08/2012 19:57

Ridiculous name sorry

suedpantsoffem · 29/08/2012 20:00

Short for Johnathan. Not an actual standalone name.

Labootin · 29/08/2012 20:01

I know two Jontys.

One is the most fucked up individual I have ever met.

the other is six (and has the potential to join the other chappie)

It may be an anecdote but personally I wouldn't.

PuffPants · 29/08/2012 20:06

Would it be short for something?

It's clearly meant to mark the bearer out as posh, but not in a cool way, more of a silly way - like Rupert.

I much prefer Johnny.

CanoeSlalom · 29/08/2012 20:06

Twee and poncy.

MrsApplepants · 29/08/2012 20:14

My DH is called this (short for Jonathan) pmsl at the twee and poncy comment, he's anything but!!

DontmindifIdo · 29/08/2012 20:18

I like it, it's a good nn for Jonathan.

Badgerina · 29/08/2012 20:51

Completely awful. Completely, and utterly, awful. Really, fucking awful.

herhonesty · 29/08/2012 21:18

Husband likes John but too boring for me. Badgering, you're lovely aren't you! A simple no would suffice..

imustbepatient · 29/08/2012 21:27

I really like it. Would have considered it as nn for Jonathan were we having a boy.

imustbepatient · 29/08/2012 21:28

(Reminds me of stellar south African cricketer called jonty Rhodes.)

PuffPants · 29/08/2012 21:30

Well, why not go with John (actually very sweet on a little boy) and nn him Johnny or Jack?

DevaDiva · 29/08/2012 21:31

One word, no. Sorry but even here in Cheshire I don't think Jonty would go down well.

Viviennemary · 29/08/2012 21:36

It's a bit showbizzy. Is there a posh presenter called Jonty. Don't like it at all I'm afraid.

BlackSwan · 29/08/2012 22:25

I'm making a posh face just thinking of saying it. Awful name to foist on a poor kid.

Ham69 · 29/08/2012 22:31

Better than 'John' which I think of as a dad's name.
Prefer Monty.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 29/08/2012 22:34

I'm with Badgerina. Fucking awful. One of the worst I have seen lately on MN tbh.

FunnysInLaJardin · 29/08/2012 22:36

I really like Jonty. Quite posh, but a good name nonetheless. Doesn't even have to be short for anything

FunnysInLaJardin · 29/08/2012 22:37

mind you where I live almost anything goes, so it does depend on your area IMO

MagdalenaAlec · 29/08/2012 22:40

I know three Jonty - 2 went to Eton other one would easily fit in Made in Chelsea, all 3 the archetype of poshness.
