Two old fashioned names - what do you think?

Trying to find a lovely name for DD and really do like both Lilian and Elsie. What do you think? Are they too old fashioned? I like the shortening of Lilian to Lily despite its popularity. Is Elsie originally a nn for Elizabeth?

I like Lilian. I think it's really pretty. It could shorten lots of ways, but isn't long enough that it is semi-automatic to shorten it IYSWIM.

Elsie I am less keen on as the full name, but it sounds very sweet as a nickname for Elizabeth.

I like Lillian and its.on an imaginary list for any future dds, envisaging using the NN Lil. (dd1 is Meg).

I dont like Elsie. Prefer Elsa.

emsyj · 29/08/2012 10:40

I like Elsie and love Elsa - sadly vetoed by DH (despite begging and pointing out Elsa the lion connection) as my friend's MIL is called Elsie and he only associates it with overbearing ladies of a certain age. I still like both names though, isn't Elsie a name in itself? Elizabeth is nice too though.

Littlecherublegs · 29/08/2012 10:42

Prefer Lilian to Elsie though they are both nice.

I know a 3 month old Elsie; dont know any Lilian's though do know of a Lilia and a Lily.

Elsa is also nice.

ViviPru · 29/08/2012 11:10

Love Lilian. I'm not so keen on Lily though... how else would you shorten it, OneDay? - Genuinely interested.

AlexanderS · 29/08/2012 11:25

Elsie is a NN for Elizabeth.

I think they are both nice. Lilian is #569 in the charts (71 babies in England and Wales in 2011). Elsie is #87 (699 babies). So neither is really, really popular, though obviously there is quite a big diference between them. Lilian makes a refreshing change I think.

anniewoo · 29/08/2012 11:27

Elsie is coming back. Lovely

almapudden · 29/08/2012 11:31

I like both but prefer Elsie as Lily is very overused. I know a lady whose name is Elise but she's known as Elsie, if you're looking for a more 'formal' name for the birth certificate.

carabos · 29/08/2012 17:29

Elsie is nice, Lilian not so much.

kaymondo · 29/08/2012 18:01

I love Elsie, was a contender for us for a while - if you want a longer version for bc tho i prefer Elspeth to Elizabeth.

HiHowAreYou · 29/08/2012 19:32

I really like Elsie, but I don't really like Lillian.

Rachog · 29/08/2012 19:36

I love elsie, it is my sister's name, short for elspeth.

DontmindifIdo · 29/08/2012 19:37

I prefer Lillian, pretty for a little girl, suitable for grown up business woman. Lilly would be the obvious nn, but not needed for Lillian, it's so lovely on it's own.

debdee · 29/08/2012 22:08

Love Lillian & I'd use Lill for short. Absolutely adore Elsie!! If I was having a girl it'd be top of my list, think it's going to become more popular over the next few years too.

exoticfruits · 29/08/2012 22:11

I think that Elsie is a horrible name. Lillian is better.

CanoeSlalom · 29/08/2012 22:43

Lilian is very pretty. Elsie nice but only as a nickname for Elisabeth or Elspeth.

NigellasGuest · 29/08/2012 22:44

ooh Lilian - that's lovely! Elsie also nice, but I prefer Lilian.

InchyInchy · 30/08/2012 10:59

I love both names!

Lilian is on my short list too :)

NoComet · 30/08/2012 11:22

Isn't Lillian a very annoying woman in the Artchers?

Elsie's nice as it is and if you have it as a NN for Elizabeth it gives loads of possibilities.

HappyAsASandboy · 30/08/2012 12:17

I love Lillian, but Elsie sounds like a nickname to me. If you want to use Elsie then I'd name her Elizabeth or Eloise.
