Irish girls names

My sister is 25 weeks and we've been up chatting about girls names. Her DH is Irish and dsis is half Irish so they'd like to give their DC an Irish name. They already have a DS (Ciaran) so would like it to go with that. So far we have:

Orla
Sinead
Clodagh

What do you think and any other suggestions?

You scared me so much I shifted the cat to my right thigh.

My first and second names have both been suggested. Smile

I love Saoirse. And Caoimhe.

How about Róis, Aoibh or Étaín?

Clodagh, couldn't imagine a baby called Sinead, and English people would murder Orla and say it awla. Clodagh is lovely.

I adore Irish names but ................. as a previous employer and now teacher (and not being of Irish origin) I find the spelling and pronunciation of Irish names so difficult!! How many poor kids have their names mispronounced at school or even overlooked on a CV because the employer is too dumb or embarrassed to find out how to pronounce the name?

buttonspoon · 30/08/2012 11:02

How about Emer or Eimear (different spelling)? She was the wide of Cuchulain the Irish folk hero and it's meaning is the embodiment of womanly virtues! I love this name.

chipmonkey · 30/08/2012 11:04

prelim, one might be better without that kind of employer!

0lympia · 30/08/2012 11:13

Prelim, London very multi cultural ime. Also, had about four bosses over the years in London and one was Irish! So Irish people can be the boss Grin London People remarkably unphased by Irish/Polish/Asian names. Nobody batted an eyelid. I guess that is London though. It might be a bit more parochial/paedestrian in other areas?

BLÁITHÍN ( bloheen)
CAILIN (calyeen)
Both pretty

chipmonkey · 30/08/2012 11:29

I love Blaithin. And it means "Little Flower" which is lovely too.

And that reminds me, I also love Cliona. ( One I know has a sister Blaithin)

Eithne? (Et-nay) I LOVE this name
Eilidh? (Ellie)

I know someone of Irish descent whose little daughter is called Aileen (pronounced the same as Eileen but just spelt differently). She's generally called Ailish, as a fond nickname. Very out of fashion, but the little girl is beautiful and because of that, the name seems beautiful now!

Clodagh is also lovely.

I would love to use an irish name but since I spend my life spelling out my surname I don't want my child to have to do it more than necessary :) I would go for one of the more straightforward names. Orla, Aileen, Ashling, Ciara (though obv out), Una, Caitlin (used quite widely in the UK) or Tara. I know someone called Laoibhaoise [ Leesha] and she has a hard time in Ireland neve mind in the UK. Siobhan is often pronounced see-oo-bawn rather than shove-awn too.
If you like Aisling [pronounced Ash ling ] I would go with the more straightforward spelling version "Ashling" as Aisling is quite often pronounced Aysssseling over here, or just totally misheard as Ashley.
In Ireland - Eileen is pronounced Eyeleen and Aileen, as Aleen [as in ABC not aaaaleen]
There are tons of websites though

squoosh · 31/08/2012 12:11

Purplecatti If you're thinking of using Eithne for any future child please be warned you've got the pronunciation completely wrong!

Eithne is pronounced Eth-nuh.

Also Eilidh is pronounced Ay-lee.
