I think it's lovely as a diminuitive for elspeth (or gabriella) but not as a name by itself.

ErikNorseman · 28/08/2012 19:23

I wouldn;t have it as a name on its own, it's a nickname. But you could call her Elle nn Ellie if you don;t like Eleanor etc.

Lovely as nickname for Elspeth.

I have a niece who is just ellie, my stepdaughtet is ellie short for Elizabeth.

I really like ellie short for elspeth, my sister is elspeth and gets elsie, lovely name.

Ellie is a very common name where I teach (stand alone name not nn) I like it but there are loads of them. On the other hand I know no Elspeths under 40ish

I wanted it for DD1 until I heard my common as muck ex mil say it one day !! Yuckkkkkk put me right off it hshah

All the Ellies I know are Eleanors, as it happens.

But I think Ellie has overtaken both Eleanor and Ella in the lists as a standalone name.

I'm not keen, personally. But it's a very accepted name.

Very very overused name around here and as a name in itself, not as a nn. However, I love Elspeth and considered it for DS had he been a girl however the thought of it being shortened to Ellie completely put me off.

MrsJohnDeere · 29/08/2012 11:12

Elspeth much nicer on its own

Boggler · 29/08/2012 11:17

I love Ellie and was thinking of calling our new dd Ellen (family name) but shortened to Ellie until I starting speaking to friends and a teacher at the school. It seems as though every class has at least one Ellie around here and therefore most are known as Ellie H. Ellie J etc and I didn't want that. Tbh I think Ellie will be like jackie, Debbie and Tracey were in the 60's & 70's and may seem very dated. Stick to elspeth it's lovely and don't shorten.

youonlysingwhenyourewinning · 29/08/2012 14:58

I know lots of Ellie's.

Some simply Ellie and others as a nn for many other names - I know an Elena, an Eleanor, an Eleanora, and several Elizabeth's.

It's a perfectly acceptable name in it's own rights.

All the Ellie's that I know are lively, mischievous children Grin

I would probably go with a longer name- Elspeth is beautiful and would have been my DD's name except I made the mistake of going along with DH. Also it gives your DD more options for what she want to call herself in later life. Its hard to imagine an Ellie as a barrister - but maybe I'm overthinking this :-D
