Frank opinions please - Ava Maria

I'm thinking of calling DD Ava Maria. Does it sound too much like Ave Maria?

DH's family is Catholic so may have strong opinions - and I do love my classical sacred music ...! But my reason for wanting these names is that I'm really just looking for variations on Eve and Mary as they are significant to me but I don't really like either of them as a name for my child IYSWIM?

Ava Manon? But we have no French links ....

Ava Marian/nne ... That could be politically incorrect within DH's family for certain reasons though!

Thoughts please? I know Ava is very popular just now but I'm ok with that, I prefer it to Eva.

Do you not use both names when telling your children off? My mum did and my middle name is horrific. My sister's is just as bad.

VeryGood · 27/08/2012 18:28

wigglesrock I should clarify that she would be known as Ava Surname. Not "Ava Maria" Surname.

Does that make a difference at all, d'you think?

I don't know, secret. Not under her old name, certainly.

She more stalked me than posted, tbh Grin

Claimed it was the only way to find out what I was up to these days Blush

SecretNutellaMedallist · 27/08/2012 18:30
Grin

You talk to yours as much as I talk to mine then?

SecretNutellaMedallist · 27/08/2012 18:32

VG- Can I just mention that one of the main people responsible for my torment in senior school was a history teacher? They will see her full name in school registers and they will comment.

HecateHarshPants · 27/08/2012 18:32

Blush I know.

She's as bad though. I find out stuff via bloody facebook!

We love each other really, honest!

wigglesrock · 27/08/2012 18:33

No, I got that, I worded it badly, I mean I like each name, if that makes more sense Grin I think Ava is a beautiful name as is Maria. I rarely use second names at all - the only reason I give them to my children is to keep in with the grannys Wink.

I mean I don't even now my best friends middle name and I'm not sure of my Mums [shrug]

wigglesrock · 27/08/2012 18:34

know not now Blush

MagdalenaAlec · 27/08/2012 19:54

Yes sorry OP, too much like Ave Maria, even though it is a positive reference.
What about Marie/Mary/Mhairi Eve? My sister has a hyphenated name with Eve and I think it flows quite nicely.

missnevermind · 28/08/2012 08:34

Verygood friend is a school teacher in her 40's.

Thinking about it Blush. My Goddaughters name is Eva Marie and I remember her Mum wanted to call her Ava Maria but was worried about other people too. She is 5.

Ava Maria is too close to Ave Maria for me. It's a shame, as it does sound nice. Agree that Ava Marianne is lovely.

My dd is eight and a half, and is Ava Christine. When she was born, it was so unusual round here, that lots of people couldn't pronounce it. People assumed we were classic film buffs and that she was named after Ava Gardner. In the secondary school I teach there are over 2,000 kids, and only one Ava. She had people call her Avva or Eva for years. However, it's now a top ten name.

A friend of mine in her 30s is called Chloe. She was the only one she knew for decades, and people had to ask her how to spell it. Look at it now!

For those of you saying it's faddy, just be aware: this year's "one-off" could become and Ava in less than a decade! There's just no way of knowing. What matters is that you love the name. Ava is easy to say, easy to spell, pretty but not cutesy and good for a baby, young woman and adult.

chipmonkey · 29/08/2012 09:27

Lovely!
And if she has a little sister you could call her Grazia Plena!Grin

mistlethrush · 29/08/2012 09:29

And the next one Agnes Dee perhaps?

Sorry, it wouldn't be for me - I would struggle to get beyond Schubert

NorthernGobshite · 29/08/2012 09:33

Yep she will be plagued by people singing her Ave maria her whole life. It's how I read it on the thread until you explained otherwise.

WandaDoff · 29/08/2012 09:35

Please don't.

I'm a Maria & I'm catholic & had that all the way through school. Actually adding Ava on the front would just make it worse.

StormGlass · 29/08/2012 09:55

Yes, it sounds too much like Ave Maria.

Although if you're planning to call her Ava Surname, you might get away with it.

VeryGood · 29/08/2012 14:57

chipmonkey and mistlethrush - I literally LOL'ed! Grin

My middle name is Maria. I like it.

I like the suggestion above of Anna Maria.

mistlethrush · 29/08/2012 16:09

I think that the name Maria is lovely (a cousin is called it, although that doesn't affect my opinion) - its just not best paired with Ava in my opinion because it will, undoubtedly, become something that she always gets and everyone will expect her to treat it as the first time they've heard the joke / song etc.
