It's totally dire. Sorry. And the names at school don't bear thinking about.

SpeedyMcNameChange · 26/08/2012 15:34

Quick namechange there...

My name is Luna. As a child, I wasn't so keen - LOTS of ammunition for teasing. I did use my middle name for a few months, but got bored of that.

Now, I love it. Everyone remembers who I am, which I think has done me many favours from a career perspective. I am a very outgoing, confident person, so my name suits me. I am not afraid to be the odd one out - Sarah or Louise would wear badly on me I think.

The Harry Potter reference is pretty weak - I'm probably of the wrong generation for it to be of massive effect, but then, so will your DD be. Wehn the Beckams said they were going to call their DD Luna I nearly cried, but then Frank Lampard beat them to it and I was very relieved.

I have met a child called Luna once, and a couple of furry friends, but no other adults. A few do exist in the world though. I've had a few random facebook messages from people thinking of Luna as a name for their DD, did a search and asked me what I thought of it as an adult!

I say go for it.

SpeedyMcNameChange · 26/08/2012 15:37

ps. I'm not a hippy (parents were though)

WithACherryOnTop · 26/08/2012 15:50

Don't like it.

Wow - that's really interesting to hear from someone with your name, SpeedyMcNameChange!

For the right adult, it's a pretty awesome name :) But I think it would be difficult as a child - especially now with the Harry Potter connection, which I'm sure will still be strong in a few years when OP's daughter is at school.

OP, if you weren't aware of the HP connection, then you should think carefully about it. In the HP books, Luna Lovegood is a very eccentric character, who is called Loony Lovegood by her classmates, and is bullied for being different ( name calling, exclusion, and having her possessions hidden). The name Loony is used a lot, and associations with being crazy pretty much define Luna in the book. She eventually becomes part of Harry's 'outer circle' of friends, and proves a very staunch and capable friend.

The message in the book is that you should look beyond whether someone is popular or not, and whether they're a bit unusual, since what matters is whether someone is a good person and a good friend. She's great from an adult reader's point of view (adults see difference - and being yourself - as a good thing), but probably not so much from a child's view (children tend to be more conformist than adults, and less accepting of difference). I doubt the children reading HP identify with Luna, or want to be her.

My DD is Luna. Obvs we love it. She has 2 very traditional middle names, so there are options for her to change it!

HaveALittleFaith · 27/08/2012 09:53

I love it but I agree there's some negative associations with it!

Nancy54 · 27/08/2012 11:58

I like Luna. i live in france and it's v popular here at the moment.

IceCubes · 27/08/2012 12:00

I think it's awesome- I would love to have a Luna! No more babies for me though, sadly!

Badvoc · 27/08/2012 12:01

It's awful IMHO.

frutilla · 27/08/2012 22:21

It's pretty, but put off by the fact that where I live (Latin America) half the dogs are called Luna. And then there's Luna Park...
