Catherine (again). Too old fashioned?

We seem to have narrowed our shortlist down now and are veering towards Catherine. But is it too old - 1960s and 1970s? I know loads of Catherines in their 30s and 40s but none under 20. Would naming a baby Catherine be like one of us being called a name from our mothers' generation like Sheila or Evelyn or Jeanette?

I have a Catherine. Shortened to Cassie. Offers a lovely classic name that never dates and a more modern- sounding alternative IMO.

If you like it, what's the problem?

OddBoots · 25/08/2012 19:09

I think it's lovely and there are lots of nicknames, I know a young Katherine called 'Kit'.

wildpoppy · 25/08/2012 19:15

Oh Cassie that is lovely. I was looking for a nickname not Kate or Cathy or Kitty. You've found it for me!

There will be hundreds of Catherines from now on due to a certain princess if nothing else. I'm a Catherine and my grandad called me Cass for some reason - no-one else ever did (Mum - Kate, Dad - Katy, brothers - Caf or Caffers, friends - Cat) but I think its nice that everyone had their own version of my name, like I was someone different to each of them! I do like Kitty though, would have liked to have used that, perhaps anyone new I introduce myself to will get Kitty from now on?!

racingheart · 25/08/2012 19:45

I love the name Catherine. It's one of my favourites. I wouldn't worry that people will name their girls after princess - don't think there was a Diana surge, was there?

Hassled · 25/08/2012 19:45

I love it. Don't instantly think of Princess Kate at all. Great name.

racingheart · 25/08/2012 19:46

Another nice nickname for Catherine is Katya.

Springforward · 25/08/2012 19:48

Nope - we have stacks of them in our family, of all ages. There are lots of NNs, if you find the full version a bit formal for everyday.

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2012 19:50

I know a 3yo Catherine. Not a out of date name at all!

Yika · 25/08/2012 20:09

Lovely classic.

SneezySnatcher · 25/08/2012 21:37

Love it. If it wasn't DSIL's name I'd have used it for DD or this new DC!

louisianablue2000 · 25/08/2012 21:44

Lovely name. I love these old names with lots of short forms like Catherine, they give you so many possibilities.

NanaNina · 25/08/2012 22:30

Both my boys were going to be Catherine's!!!

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 25/08/2012 22:32

It's lovely dds best friend is a Catherine, she's 6, it's never occurred to me it might be old fashioned.

thenightsky · 25/08/2012 22:33

LOVE Catherine.

Pumpster · 25/08/2012 22:34

It's my name and I really like it!

joanofarchitrave · 25/08/2012 22:36

I know a little Catherine. It has the best nicknames - Cass is ineffably cool and so is Kit.

SecretNutellaMedallist · 25/08/2012 22:38

Classic, rather than dated or old-fashioned.

CanoeSlalom · 25/08/2012 23:08

Cassie is nice but I'd have thought it was a nickname for Cassia or Cassandra, as there's no "s" in Catherine.

puffylovett · 26/08/2012 00:10

I'm a Catherine and I love it. Don't like Cath, which I get called by most of my friends and dp. Used o be a cathy to ex dp. I hate both abbreviations.

My parents on the other hand used to call me Frin Boleyn - don't ask! I loved that nn :)

emilysmi · 26/08/2012 23:06

Absolutely lovely. If it wasnt my SIL's name then it would be top of my list for a DD.

GoodHeavensNo · 26/08/2012 23:23

I know two 5 year old Catherines. One is usually shortened to Kitty. I think it is more timeless than other 60s and 70s names.
