Having a lot of last minute issues with our chosen girls name..(which I have promised not to reveal)

DH last night suggested Lisa as a nn. Without wishing to offend anyone, I don't think I like it very much and can't imagine it for a baby.

What do you think about Lisa?

And:

Are nicknames 'important'? The chosen name itself only has two syllables... I know we can't stop nn from developing at school but guess we don't have to have one from the start?

The only "Lisa" I kow is Annalisa who is now about 17 - she tends to use Annalisa now rather than Lisa which she was known as all through her childhood.

I'm on the fence here I think - maybe a bit "Simpsons"??

squoosh · 23/08/2012 14:52

I know lots of Lisas in their thirties.

It is a nice sound and will come back in a big way at some stage, not for a while yet though. That's not to say you shouldn't use it.

i have a name that was popular in my mother's generation. i would never be so cruel as to do that to a child. i have an old person's name. people complain about being 3 in a class, but i would have much preferred a popular name than an old person's one.

IawnCont · 23/08/2012 17:54

I LOVE it. Hugely pretty, strong and underused IMO. I don't think it's the same type as Claire or Nicola- It's not generational to me.

The only lisa I know, her parents are Brazilian. I think maybe that is the reason. It's a bit unfashionable now but I guess it's not unattractive. She'd be the only one. Unless you live near me!

0lympia · 23/08/2012 19:07

I do like some dated names though. Jillian, Lindsay, Melanie, Stephanie for example. Those are all lovely. Perhaps they have a bit more substance than Lisa though.

0lympia · 23/08/2012 19:08

Anneliese -> lisa is an idea ? I would have to be quite anal about spelling of Anneliese thoguh. I hate fancy spellings of Anneliese like Annaleese

materrules · 23/08/2012 19:09

Im a Lisa and ive always loved my name- never had mona as a nn! was common at school (80's child) but in adult life we seem to be rare!

AKissIsNotAContract · 23/08/2012 19:11

I really like Lisa.

GnocchiNineDoors · 23/08/2012 19:13

I like the name. I know one in her thirties and she is a machine Grin like a career juggernaut.

Hope she isnt on here, as this will out me, but she gets called L.B as her surname starts with you guessed it a B.

I like the 'LB' nickname.

kissyfur · 23/08/2012 19:14

Sorry but I don't like it, but that's probably cos I knew a Lisa who was a complete cow.

mrsmangelsneck · 23/08/2012 19:15

I like it a lot and considered it for dd, like Annalisa/Annelise etc too.

Viviennemary · 23/08/2012 19:16

I'm not very keen. It's a dated name. But short for something else I suppose it wouldn't be too bad.

Thanks. Useful feedback. Think we will stick with the actual name we had in mind (and refuse to have nicknames!)

I will never again be able to see the name Lisa without thinking of Leesir...

Ham69 · 23/08/2012 21:21

What everlong said. I knew a Lisa who used to love Leibfraumilch (each to their own!) and renamed it 'Lisa's milk'! Sorry, that's all I can think of when I hear the name.

mrsmangelsneck · 23/08/2012 21:33

I love Julie and Karen and Marie too! Good job I'm not planning any more.

confuddledDOTcom · 23/08/2012 21:35

My eldest has a name with a few shortenings, we have always said she's not X or Y (what really winds me up is that my husband's SIL calls her one of them but she doesn't know her, we can see them once every year or two, I know it's enough to not care but it's the faux familiarity I don't like from people who refuse to have anything to do with us) everyone has kept to calling her by her full name. One of the shortenings (the one SIL uses) sounds like a statement so we've taught her to turn it back on people. She loves her name and doesn't like it being shortened anyway.

It's not that I don't like nicknames/ shortenings but I gave my children their names and until they're old enough to change them for themselves it's no one else's place to do it for them. My second daughter will tell you her name ends with an "ie" sound and the other one is the shortening. She's not old enough to know the difference and as that's what she calls herself I'm happy to go along with it, she accepts both anyway and some nicknames that aren't shortenings.

CanoeSlalom · 23/08/2012 22:00

I like it. It's pretty and underused at the moment.

saffronwblue · 23/08/2012 22:03

I likie it. Makes me thing of my hero Lisa Simpson.

It's my sister's name, and I absolutely love it.
