Make a case for Alice

I want to love Alice. I should love Alice. It is my feisty spunky 90 year old Gran's middle name. I'd like it if I could fall in love with it before/if we have DD2 so I could put it in either the first or middle spot. Tell me why you love it. Aaaand, go.

I love Alice!! It is pretty, sweet, simple and had a sort of clean, fresh feel to it. AND Tina Fey named one of her daughters Alice, and she is the coolest woman in the world. Grin

Badgerina · 23/08/2012 08:06

Alice, Alice who the fuck is Alice?

I love it.

Alice in Wonderland.

HistoryNerd · 23/08/2012 10:06

I like it, my sister in laws daughter is named Alice and its a very pretty name. However, I work in a school, and I know at least 5 Alice's that go there. And its a pretty small school. That would put me off.

MammaTonic · 23/08/2012 13:13

Oh, I want to love it, too. I wanted it on my shortlist for DD1 as it has such pedigree; it's a classic, un-faddy, solid name.

but it's just so boring

It's that little niggle that put me off.

Sorry.

Alice is lovely, I'd certainly have it as a second name.

coffeeandwine · 23/08/2012 13:18

if I ever had a DD, she was going to be called Alice. Lovely, traditional name. As I only have DS's, i've never beena be to use it.Sad

coffeeandwine · 23/08/2012 13:18

never been able...

Longdistance · 23/08/2012 13:29

My dd2 is Alice. She's our angel child. We should have named her Alice Angel. Don'tcall your child Eleanor though. As that's a devil child's name Wink

scrablet · 23/08/2012 13:31

'cos it's a great name. But if you don't like it...don't use it or you will be gritting your teeth for ever.

Hassled · 23/08/2012 13:33

Timeless, would suit a pretty little toddler or an elegant older woman. It's not exclusively a baby name, it's not exclusively a granny name. Will never be over-fashionable or unfashionable. Good literary connection, easy to say, easy to spell.

greensnail · 23/08/2012 13:33

I have an Alice and she's fab. It's not very common with little ones where I am but so many people tell me they love the name and lots of people have stories of how their great aunt Alice was the coolest old lady ever!

MrsJohnDeere · 23/08/2012 13:37

Beautiful classic name.

MinnieBar · 23/08/2012 13:37

It's a fucking awesome name.

The only downside I can think of is that if you have a sibling who can't say their 'L's then she might get called Awice a lot bit. But even that won't last for ever presumably.

Tittywhistles · 23/08/2012 13:44

It's our top choice if this bump turns out to be a girl

Am SO over all the fashionable loopy names, I want something classic, which Alice is but it also has that little strange fairy taley twist to it.

Alice or Celia. (omg just realised that's the same name rearranged..Weird!)

Agnesinroom25 · 23/08/2012 13:47

I have an Alice, she is a strong tomboyish type. The name picked her though I had never even considered it but she came out and just looked like an Alice so that was that.

GnocchiNineDoors · 23/08/2012 13:48

My DDs MN is Alice. I wanted a literary connection, being a lover of books, so DD has FN and MN of women in books I love.

In the end her first name went first as dh pteferred it.

babyblabber · 23/08/2012 19:24

My littlest sister is alice and she is the coolest person I know. She's so confident at only 23, doesn't pay attention to what anyone thinks, is incredibly laid back so never stressed and she just knows things will work our for her and they do. Cool name for a cool person I think, as well as being pretty, timeless and original. Have never met another Alice. Really really wanted Alice for DD's middle name but had to go with MIL's name

saffronwblue · 23/08/2012 22:09

(Tittywhistles I have a Celia). Also really like the name Alice but DH had a family cat with this name so we didn't want to use it.
Alice is cool, pretty, intelligent. Lovely classic name.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 22:12

you can 'shorten' it to Alligator when she's being a pain
You'll never be short for inspiration for fancy dress parties

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2012 22:14

If you go for Alice I will send DD's (Alice) Alice in Wonderland dress I've been trying unsuccessfully to sell on ebay :o

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 23/08/2012 22:18

I think Alice is a truly fantastic name. It's classic, it doesn't date, it sounds nice - pretty but unfussy all at the same time.

It starts with the first letter of the alphabet which is supposed to mean you are more successful in life (think I read that somewhere but I may have made it up, sorry).

It has literary connotations, it's a name everyone has heard of and can spell, but it isn't ubiquitous.

What's not to like??

ravenAK · 23/08/2012 22:19

Absolutely love it. My friend beat me to it (OK, her Alice was in her teens & they were living in another country by the time dd1 was born, but I still felt I couldn't use it).

So I have an Alicia, which I also love, but Alice is a gorgeous name - Alices are cool, clever, sensible-but-not-boring.

charlottery · 23/08/2012 22:41

I have an Alice, she's gorgeous. I think its a good strong name that will suit her all her life. (She wants to be called Jasmine though!)

Gugglebum · 23/08/2012 23:15

I feel nudged ever so slightly toward it. For some reason I keep picturing a massive hulking girl saying "You can call me Al." Confused I love the literary links, and it fits old or young, gah. Odd too that I like the way it looks better than the way it sounds? It's one of the only normal names in my family tree (and by normal I mean not completely awful)... you are making a good case ladies, and some have made me lol. need that today. Grin

Alice is such a lovely name. For a start it's Welsh (and us Welsh are the best) but it has a beautiful meaning- 'noble'. It's also got Alice in Wonderland, and my DD2 (who has the name of a story character) always loved reading about someone with her name, so a girl with the name Alice would love reading about a girl called Alice (and she'd probably have to see/take part in a school play about Alice in Wonderland too). Also, Alice is my DD3's name. It fits everyone- my sister was also an Alice, as was my great-aunt, great-grandmother etc; (it's a family name) and they've fitted everybody. My sister WAS that massive hulking girl (though we called her Crocodile or Snappers, not Al) and my daughter is a tiny, dainty baby. It fits everyone and is beautiful for everyone.
