Strong name for a girl?

thisonehasalittlecar · 22/08/2012 22:19

Just back home with my new dd, who is very long! I suspect she's going to be very tall like her dad and now most of the names on my shortlist seem too girly. Any suggestions for 'strong' girls' names? Unusual is fine as her siblings have quite unusual names.

Esther - she was a strong biblical Queen who saved her people.

Congratulations!
I too am the proud mum of a 54cm (that is 21 1/4", I believe) long DD - at birth. We had a short list in mind but quickly excluded "girly" names... (Octavia was #1)
Anyway, here is the final list we had for her:
Antonia (hers now)
Adelaide
Astrid
Iris
Constance

imustbepatient · 23/08/2012 09:24

Love Portia from the above list! It is the 'would love to use it but too worried/scared' name from my list! Just know she would get references to the car all childhood (notwithstanding the different spelling and Shakespeare reference).

RillaBlythe · 23/08/2012 09:31

Bit of an odd implication that tall women can't be 'girly'?

I like strong names for girls though, both of my DDs have appeared here.

Arabel (has to be spelt thus)
Tamsin
Morag
Clea

MagdalenaAlec · 23/08/2012 10:06

Not at all RillaBlythe, often the opposite even (think models eg)
but we all have physical characteristics associated with names and I agree with the OP that a cutesy name "goes" better with a tiny baby. Looking at my DD right now and thinking Molly, Daisy or Evie makes me giggle.

Oh OP, here is another one for you: Penelope!
Good luck naming your future basketball star :o

Lilith! Ultimate strong woman.

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 23/08/2012 10:24

Diana? As in goddess rather than princess. Due a rivival I feel.

fluffygal · 23/08/2012 10:31

Ooh my name is on here! I am anything but strong though :-( How about Zanna (pronounced like Hannah), this is my DDs name, I had a similar problem when she was born. She was going to be Willow but was too feisty!

Badgerina · 23/08/2012 10:55

Boudiccea. Boo for short? Grin

bigredDi · 23/08/2012 11:04

I'd go with Celtic names as they are usually strong names or nordic sounding names.
e.g. Fionn
Claudia
Bethan
Ingrid

PolkaDotMoon · 23/08/2012 14:32

DS was 59cms at birth Shock so will keep an eye on this thread in case of future DD Grin
I quite like Anwen and it means 'very beautiful' so lends itself to tall or short I'd say Smile

Have you chosen yet?

thisonehasalittlecar · 23/08/2012 22:16

Hi, I'm back (new-born very interfering with MN habit), some great suggestions here! I have run a few of these past DH with not much luck. Polkadotmoon where is Anwen from? Dd is 59 cms-- the midwife looked at the tape and said, "I'm just going to check that again... "

Thisonehas, without wanting to turn this into competitive mums Smile, my son was 61cm at birth. I didn't feel the urge to give him a 'butch' type name. I was a little concerned he'd be a giant, but now at the age of almost six, he's 91st centile, so has dropped considerably and 'fits in' very well in his school year. What I'm trying to say is, she may not be exceptionally tall, and if you like the sound of the girly name you had in mind, what's to say it won't suit her?
Congratulations by the way!

thisonehasalittlecar · 23/08/2012 22:37

Good point ham, maybe it's less to do with the height thing than just looking at her and thinking they don't suit her.

gettingdesperatenow · 23/08/2012 23:43

Elizabeth
Katherine/Catherine
Victoria
Margaret
Helen (which actually means 'strong')
Eleanor
Alexandra
Ruth
Hannah
Rebecca
Deborah
Esther

For some reason, there are a lot of Biblical names there!

I had a 58cm DS at birth, who is now just below 50th centile at 5.5 years old and very slim, quite delicate looking really. She may not stay tall!

And tall girls can have girly names...and vice versa. I'm tiny and proper scary!

joanofarchitrave · 23/08/2012 23:46

Charlotte? I think people think of it as a 'pretty' name but it actually means 'strong and womanly'.

scaredycat12 · 23/08/2012 23:48

The first name that popped into my head was Cressida!

FrizzyFrazzled · 23/08/2012 23:51

I have a beautiful, very tall friend called shannon. So now I associate that with being a strong name. Also Scarlett, Sasha.
