Love the name Catherine. What NNs are there other than:

Kate/Cate/Katie
Cath/y
Cat
Kitty

Katya, K or C or Rina (not that I like the latter) possibly? More diminutives than for most other names.... Think you/she will have plenty of options as she grows up!

ellesabe · 21/08/2012 19:09

Kay? Maybe more of a shortening for Katheryn though...

Kizzy
Caitlin
Casy,
Kathleen,
Cathie/Kathie
Katrine,

If you like the name why have a nicknameConfused

MamaMary · 21/08/2012 21:45

Love the name too and am considering it for DC2, but my question is: how do I stop people calling her by nicknames?

wildpoppy · 21/08/2012 21:50

I like nicknames and want to choose one while a baby to avoid it being one I don't like once at school.

Reeny? I'm not sure that's spelt right,

amck5700 · 21/08/2012 21:54

I know a young Kizzy and think it is lovely - she is officially known at school etc as Kizzy so no chance of another nickname being used unless it is something that is short for Kizzy as I don't know if anyone knows that her official name is Katherine

LadyWidmerpool · 22/08/2012 00:13

It's her name, let her pick her own nickname.

It happens to be my name and I refused to answer to nicknames when I was growing up because I hated them.

piprabbit · 22/08/2012 00:21

Just because you pick a nn, doesn't mean that's the one her schoolfriends will choose to use.

I have a friend whose mother insisted he was called James. All nn were completely forbidden. Everybody, absolutely everybody except his mother calls him Jimbo.

hugandroll · 22/08/2012 00:24

Im a kathryn. I was Katy young, Kate in juniors and kat from mid high school on. Sometimes kath, never kathy. Some people now don't know I'm a Kathryn as everyone calls me kat.

BackforGood · 22/08/2012 00:24

Have to agree with the others - it's not the parent who picks the school nickname ! Wink

PopOozeTheFastest · 22/08/2012 00:29

Wondering if Lady is my sister, as she did exactly the same thing Grin.

She is now known as Kate and has been all of her adult life - had anyone called her that as a child or teen though, she wouldn't have liked it, not at all.

I agree that parents don't choose nicknames for the whole of their children's lives - but they do pick them for the pre-school years.

workshy · 22/08/2012 00:42

I've known a Catherine and a Kathryn -neither got shortened as they always insisted they were called Catherine (I also know a Jenifer that has never been Jenny or Jen but that's a different story)

you can't dictate nicknames

my niece was called Rebecca to be know as Becky, as soon as she got to high school she insited on her full name which I find quite funny as my sister doesn't actually like the name Rebecca and only gave her the name because the inlaws insisted she should have a proper name

MrsShrek3 · 22/08/2012 00:45

This isn't going to make sense I fear, but here goes anyway!!
My dd has a long name which is shortened to a "normal" more popular name at home, mainly by her brothers and grandparents. The two are interchangeable and she doesn't only get the "long" one when she's in trouble or on Sundays or anything daft! However, she insists on her full name at school (and tbh would tag her middle name in too if she could get away with it) and simply ignores anyone calling her the shortened version. Including the headteacher Blush Grin

needsgirlname · 22/08/2012 10:58

Nina? But you'll have to really hammer that in to stick i guess. In school she might be Kate, or Kat though.

Lifeonthecanal · 22/08/2012 12:29

I'm a Catherine and can honestly say I have never been called anything else and it's never shortened. I guess when I was small my parents always used my full name and it just stuck. I always introduce myself as Catherine so that's what I get called.

MamaMary · 22/08/2012 14:00

My friend is called Catherine. Some people call her Kate, some call her Katie, and some call her Catherine.

I would call my DD Catherine if I thought people would stick to it, but you just cannot predict what she'll end up being called, as this thread proves.

ErikNorseman · 23/08/2012 14:29

Katherine is a lovely name on its own. I have never liked the idea of parents choosing nicknames before the child is born, if you like the name just call her Katherine. A nickname might evolve organically or it might not.

ErikNorseman · 23/08/2012 14:44

If you want to call her Nina or Reenie then call her Nina or Reenie Confused

Why force a nickname based on a tenuous connection that sounds nothing like the actual name?
