Odd family name choices

Friend has ds 1yo called A first name B second name
Her sil has dd 10mo and just had ds who she's called same name b name a middle name
Clearly just smiled and said congrats but thought it really odd
Nene 'b' is pretty unusual, name a not unusual but less used
I just wondered how often this happens?
I haven't spoken to friend about it, I know she'll be less than enamoured but will smile sweetly gritted teeth
The sil has made it clear she wants a huge family all close in age I hope she's got more inspiration for the rest

I'm confused . . . your friend and her sil gave their child the same first name and also share a surname?

sleepdodger · 20/08/2012 22:52

Sorry no, as in child 1 is Lola jasmine and child 2 is jasmine Lola!

I have two cousins with the same Christian name (not brothers though!)

We thought it was a little odd when the younger one was born but I don't think the older one's mum was that bothered really. Problem is, the younger one has been 'Little X' his whole life and probably always will be - he is now 16 and 6ft tall!

Another of my cousins has given his son the male version of his sister's name and they use the same nickname (eg son is Daniel, sister is Daniella and they both go by Danny). Doesn't seem to upset anybody though.

Distant relatives of mine called their daughter Georgina Elizabeth, another set called theirs Elizabeth Georgina, the girls are first cousins.

My DM was not called Jacqueline because it was too difficult to spell, we always thought that it was odd that my DM's cousin was then called Jacqueline.

My younger cousin had children before me and called his DS Lewis, presumably because of Lewis Hamilton, whereas I'd liked it from Lewis Collins (The Professionals) as had LH's parents, probably, I'd remembered there was an Unle Lew too, but not one my cousin would have known about.

My DM says that families tend to like the same things and that is why at a recent family wedding, most of my DF's brothers had nearly identical clothes, shoes and cameras. My DM and her SIL's all had same clothes style too. Maybe it is an age thing!

I've got the same name as my cousin's middle names.

She's Catherine Emma Jane and I'm Emma Jane

(an example not real names!)

I have cousins who are brother and sister, the girl is the eldest and her middle name is the first name of her younger brother, I could never get my head around that, it is a unisex name and is spelt differently BUT is the same name. I always just thought they had no imagination to be honest!

My DD has as her middle name the same name as my cousin has as her first name.

It was my granny's name, she died about a year before DD was born and about 2 years before my cousin was born.

If they're family names - it could be that they both wanted to name their baby after the same relative.

My DP, BIL and DFIL have 3 names betwwen them - as in, FIL is John David, DP is David Luke and BIL is Luke John. Bit weird, and causes isshoos as DMIL is often very distracted on the phone so if someone calls for John David, half the time she'll tell them that he lives in London now, or in Scotland, rather than in the sitting room, hold on!

My cousins have a similar thing - the MN of one is the first name if the next in line, but only the girls - as in, Clara Jane, Jane Rose and Rose Blah blah.

greenandcabbagelooking · 27/08/2012 16:23

I have my cousins' (sisters) middle names as my first and middle names. For example Laura Rose and Rebecca Charlotte and I'm Charlotte Rose. No idea why, and there's a six and ten year age gap between us, no not really names that were in vogue at the time.

I have a colleague (Welsh ancestry if it makes a difference) with the same name as his dad and his DS - each uses a different first name. He says this goes back a fair way in his family tree.

e.g. Evan Rhys Geraint Williams (not the real names), he is known as Geraint Williams, his father is known as Rhys Williams and his son Evan Williams.

Wonders what they would do if they had a third Confused

Lyftiduft · 27/08/2012 20:00

think it's the male first born in each generation who gets the names, colleagues DBro has a different name I think

GetDownNesbitt · 27/08/2012 20:06

DS2's first name is the same as DN1's middle name - both after the same family member.

DN2 shares one of his middle names with DS1 - both after different family members!

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2012 20:09

I know a family where all the boys - every branch, every generation - have the same first name. Then there is a complicated system of who uses it, who uses their middle name, who uses which nickname. They all live in the same small town, and are always being accidentally called for another one's dentist appt etc. It's crackers.

My Niece and DD have the same middle name, which is my first name
