honest opinions needed

I am trying for our DC 2, DD1 was stillborn last year, so we have been through a lot. I was pg last summer and unfortunatly also lost that baby to an early miscarriage. But while we were pg, DH suggested the name Odessa for a girl. It means journey, and well we thought it was pretty, strong and had a meaning that didn't completly take over.

So we still love this name but I wanted some honest opinions.

Does it mean anything bad to you, does it bring up any bad connotations? I don't really care if it sounds chavvy or too unsual. I just want to make sure we are not missing anything about the name.

Thanks

I am not keen, but I am unimportant in the scheme of things. I prefer Ottoline but it isn't what you suggested.
I googled it but didn't find anything else to replace it.
Go with your gut instinct, the other thing that would niggle me is if she was abbreviated to Odd.
Good luck.

This is from Wikipedia:

The Odessa File is a thriller by Frederick Forsyth, first published in 1972, about the adventures of a young German reporter attempting to discover the location of a former SS concentration-camp commander.

The name ODESSA is an acronym for the German phrase "Organisation der Ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen", which translates as “Organization of Former Members of the SS”. The novel alleges that ODESSA is an international Nazi organization established before the defeat of Nazi Germany for the purpose of protecting former members of the SS after the war instead of a war veterans' group.

...a shame as I think it's a lovely name...

WithACherryOnTop · 18/08/2012 16:20

It makes me think of the Odessa Masacre.

Gumby · 18/08/2012 16:22

Sorry tO hear what you've been through Sad

I don't like it im afraid

WithACherryOnTop · 18/08/2012 16:23

And Battleship Potemkin.

fanjodisfunction · 18/08/2012 16:33

Thank you for the feedback, can I ask did you hear the name and instantly think of those things or was it through a web search?

I like it! And love its meaning too :)

lottiegarbanzo · 18/08/2012 16:35

Odessa is a city in eastern Russia. it features in the 'Odessa Steps' sequence in the film Battleship Potemkin, famous in film circles as an early example of montage editing. This reference will only be known to people interested in film. I am and it happens to be the first thing that comes to my mind.

But... The sequnce portrays a massacre by Russian soldiers, firing into a crowd of civilians. The most poignant image involves a baby (which may have gone on to survive, I think you don't see it actually come to harm). I'm not going to describe it, look it up on Wikipedia if you want to know. A very poignant and powerful image, not happy.

WithACherryOnTop · 18/08/2012 16:37

I instantly thought of them. I wouldn't say that everyone would, but I'm sure there'll be others.

NellyBluth · 18/08/2012 16:38

Odessa does make me think of the city - but DD is also shares her name with a city and so far no one has commented on that (not even in a polite, 'do you have a connection to the city' way). Odessa is very pretty.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 18/08/2012 16:41

It would be too out there for me, but you have a personal reason for it I can think of no good reason why not.

I personally think the link of Odessa to the recent massacre is a bit tenuous and wont last.

lottiegarbanzo · 18/08/2012 16:42

Otherwise I don't know much about the city of Odessa. It's a port, so this could be a bit like calling your child 'Liverpool' but it's also where the trans-Siberian railway ends up, so a sense of distant eastern mystery and connection in a way, which links to your idea of journey.

I would think of the city before thinking 'oh, a feminine version of odessy'.

HolyOlympicNamechangeBatman · 18/08/2012 17:05

I honestly think it's awful, it doen't make me think of anything negative other than it just has a horrible sound. I don't like a name starting with 'odd', and not a very nice nn either.

lottiegarbanzo · 18/08/2012 17:08

The sound is ode though, o-dess-a. I think the nn would be Dessa.

MadBusLady · 18/08/2012 17:08

Instant ODESSA as in the SS reference for me, I'm afraid. Not quite as bad as Adolf but getting there.

fanjodisfunction · 18/08/2012 17:13

Its pronouced O - dessa not Odd -essa. And nn would prbably be Dessie.

I will look up that movie.

I know its also a town in Texas.

I've never heard of the odessa files I will look that up too.

Thanks ladies.

Sorry to hear what you and your family have been through. I do like the name but did automatically think of the Odessa Files novel.

LineRunner · 18/08/2012 17:18

I immediately thought of the city in Russia, but didn't think of 'journey' until you mentioned it (and then thought of Odyssey).

The city is a survivor. And a beautiful place. Also the sound of the word is inherently attractive, I think.

EnjoyResponsibly · 18/08/2012 17:28

I immediately thought of the Odessa Files.

It's pretty, but I can imagine it being shortened to Odie, which instantly recalls the dog in Garfield.

HiHowAreYou · 18/08/2012 17:55

I just thought of the city. I've never heard of the Nazi thing.

It's quite a nice sounding word, and if it has a meaning to you, that's good too. :)

I didn't think the name being a city was a bad thing. I think it's meant to be quite a nice city actually!

perplexedpirate · 18/08/2012 17:58

Yes, Odessa steps and Battleship Potemkin here too.

The films a classic as well, so it's not like it'll be forgotten.

monsterchild · 18/08/2012 18:01

It is a town in Texas, normally never said on its own, it's always Midland/Odessa. In the heart of oil country.

But it's a nice name, I like it. I thought of Odysseus. And then Ulysses, and then the US civil War, but I'm like that.

IawnCont · 18/08/2012 18:04

The first thing that came to mind was the strong, no-nonsense Odessa from The Colour Purple. And because of her, to me it is a good strong name.
Good luck to you, and I'm sorry about all the sadness you've had x

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2012 18:05

So sorry about your babies.

I immediately thought of Odessa File and am not fond of it as a name, sorry.

Badgerina · 18/08/2012 18:14

I think of Battleship Potemkin, The Odessa Files and Russian espionage. There are a LOT of lovelier names out there.
