Mabel - shortenings?

Does anyone have or know a Mabel and what does it get shortened to? It's one of our top two for DD due, but not keen on Maisie and wondering if this becomes a nickname you can't avoid?

I know an old lady known as belle and a toddler known as May. I think its a lively name.

neversaydie · 18/08/2012 16:56

My grandmother was Mabel, always called May. My sister had May as a second name after her.

I think May is a lovely name - it makes me think of clouds of white flowers in the hedgerows, at my favourite time of year. And is blessedly difficult to shorten.

I am not quite so sure about Mabel. Granny was a farmer's daughter, and as a young adult worked in the dairy in her uncle's farm. She once advised me very seriously to 'Never learn how to milk a cow dear, or you will never do anything else.' So her name does tend to make me think of milkmaids!

Mae/May or Belle would be the obvious ones I would think

Slainte · 18/08/2012 17:01

I don't think it needs to be/will be shortened it's quite a short name anyway.

MammaTonic · 18/08/2012 17:14

May/Mae, Mabe, Mimi, Belle, Bee, Bibi.

I know a cat called Mabel. It gets shortened to Mabes or Mabelly-Moo. I can't think of any obvious nn's for Mabel apart from May. It's so short it doesn't really need one does it?

CPtart · 18/08/2012 19:17

Mabe came to mind immediately, or mabes.

mejon · 18/08/2012 20:47

Not sure how Maisie is a nn for Mabel. Mabel is a short enough name in itself. Having said that, DD2 is Mabli which is the Welsh version and she's sometimes called Mab or Mabs so feel free to ignore me Grin.

MacMac123 · 18/08/2012 21:08

Ok this is good! Maisie isn't a NN for Mabel!

My great gran was Mabel and it's my dd1 middle name. Really wished I had used it as a first name.

My great gran used to get called mabs

CruCru · 21/08/2012 10:25

What about Mab? It is the name of the fairy in Romeo and Juliet? They only refer to her, the audience doesn't meet her. "O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you" etc.

TellyBug · 21/08/2012 10:35

Mabes. Pronounced babes.

Lyftiduft · 25/08/2012 22:09

LyftiDog is Mabel- she is Mabel-Moo or Mabes. My MiL calls her Moobs or Mooby...!

I don't think a person called Mabel would really need a nn?

exoticfruits · 25/08/2012 22:16

Great aunt Mabel was called Dot- no idea why! (she didn't have a second name)
I don't know any other.I would guess at Mabs or Belle.

NellyBluth · 25/08/2012 22:19

Maebe/Maybe. Which is one of those names I strangely like the sound of but would never be brave enough to call my daughter. But I really would use it as a nickname!

Crocodilio · 25/08/2012 22:19

Mabes or Maybe for my cousin's dd.

waitingtobeamummy · 25/08/2012 22:30

My grandma was called mabel! always thought I would have it as middle name if I had a baby. Her nickname was mabe (pronounced maybe)

Bicnod · 25/08/2012 22:44

The Mabel in my life (gorgeous 3 year old of friends) is usually Mabes.
