I love the name xanthe as it sounds so pretty but it is obviously not easy to spell and may draw some confused responses from people not familiar with it. Does anyone have personal experience of having or being a xanthe? How big an issue are the above? Many thanks.

My cousin has this name and nickname is Zee. Any name you have will be shortened or changed at some point so don't worry about it :)

A friend's sister has just had a baby and named her Xanthe, it's unusual but nice. I'd not heard it before so wasn't sure to start with if she'd had a boy or a girl but it didn't take long to find out.

I love it

I've only ever known one who will be an adult now and was often known as Zan or Zannah

Although it's rarely used I think most people are familiar with it as a name.

I think it's a beautiful name but have not ever heard it on muumsnet!! Is it pronounced Zan te or Zan thay??

Once stayed in the Xanthe Studios in Skiathos. Is it Greek?

bagladywilts · 17/08/2012 13:29

I think it is Greek in origin. Pronounced zan thee.

Mostly it will be pronounced zanthee in the UK, but it is really Xanthe with a definite X.
A lovely name, either way.

I absolutely love it. Gorgeous name. An old friend's mum is called Xanthe.

SiL is a Xanthe and I think it's a great name, sometimes shortened to Xanth. Doesn't seem to cause too much confusion in terms of pronunciation and kind of cool to have a name beginning with X.

Never met any, would have presumed it was said like Santh.
I am easily tongue-tied & would end up saying it wrong fairly often to start with.
Fine, but they will have to explain how to spell & say it all their lives more often than if you called them, say, Anna or Jessica.
More likely to have trouble saying own name if they end up with speech delay (I gave my own speech delayed child a difficult name to say properly).
