Innes? Guy?

DH and I are having PFB at the end of November. PFB is a little boy. DH and I had been able to think up and agree on girls names with no problem but we're really struggling with boys.

We like fairly traditional names but there seems to be do many Sams and Olivers out there so we'd like something a little more unusual.

I'm Scottish and I do want a Scottish connection. I love Rory but DH has vetoed that. He likes James which I quite like but don't love.

I do like Innes which is a traditional Scottish name and not over used. We live in England also I don't think we'd come across many in DS' year at school. Another option is Guy (which obviously isn't Scottish) but I quite like too.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome on all of this. I want little DS to have a name that we luuuurrvve but I just can't find anything!

At first glance I thought you were varying the spelling of Ines, Spanish girl's name. I've only come across Innes once, as a middle name. Could confuse people? Guy's nice, goes with Miles I think.

shinyblackgrape · 16/08/2012 21:21

Hmmm - this worries me a bit re Innes. Innes is a fairly well known Scottish surname so wouldn't be an issue in Scotland re confusion with Inez etc. I didn't want DS to be teased!

I think Innes is a great name. Lovely to honour your ds's Scottish heritage too.

The girls' name Ines is pronounced very differently (emphasis on the EZ) and it is not used widely either these days.

TeamGB2012 · 16/08/2012 21:56

Innes is nice.

Or

Murdo
Lachlan
Fergus
Murray
Donald
Cameron
Finlay

rachel1970 · 16/08/2012 21:57

Another vote for Innes. Much nicer and more interesting than James or Guy imo.

mrstowers · 16/08/2012 21:59

I adore the name Innes. It is one of DHs family surnames (he's Scottish). We also have lots in the family with Innes as a middle name and also one with Innes as a first name. I love it.

lottiegarbanzo · 16/08/2012 22:02

OK, only other discouraging thought on Innes is that on hearing it I would think of John Innes compost. Very good compost but perhaps not the ideal association? Though, once people get used to any name they'll associate it with your son.

evamummy · 16/08/2012 22:03

Innes is a great name imo. Agree that is much more interesting (and less overused) than James. I'm not keen on Guy, sorry.

bramblina · 16/08/2012 22:31

I LOVE Innes, and have an nephew called Innes, only reason it is not on my list! He's gorgeous, too! Grin

TeamGB2012 · 16/08/2012 22:32

Oh, just notcied PFB is due at the end of November. November 30 is St Andrew's Day.

shinyblackgrape · 16/08/2012 23:02

Thanks for all the feedback. I've noted the compost situation - maybe he could be compo for a nickname!

team - middle names are likely to be Andrew and William so that should cover off St Andrew's day well!

Innes. Much better than Guy.

Bunbaker · 17/08/2012 12:09

I'm not keen on Murdo, sounds too much like murder to me. Also, how would you pronounce Innes? Inness?

squoosh · 17/08/2012 12:20

Guy much better than Innes.

The only Innes' I've met have been really weedy and runny nosed.

redrubyshoes · 17/08/2012 12:24

Fraser is a good strong name.

BuntyCollocks · 17/08/2012 12:26

I LOVE Innes. I wanted it for DS. Also love Ruaridh, and Alexander.

BuntyCollocks · 17/08/2012 12:27

bunbaker - it's pronounced In-nes.

GlaikitFizzog · 17/08/2012 12:31

Innes was on our short list

Along with
Struan
Ruairidh
Fraser
Blair
Harris
Ramsey

We went with Blair, anything there tickle your fancy?

I would stick with innes if I were you though. :)

invicta · 17/08/2012 12:36

Douglas
Munro
Glen
Harrison
Stuart/Stewart
Callum
Finn/Finley

yellowraincoat · 17/08/2012 12:37

I'm Scottish and I've never heard Innes as a first name. Not sure about it to be honest.

I prefer more traditional names though, James, Stewart and the frankly underused Alan.

GlaikitFizzog · 17/08/2012 12:58

There are a few young Innes' round here and I used to work with 2. Maybe it's more a north east name??

You can't go wrong with Alan! Dbro is an Alan!

shinyblackgrape · 17/08/2012 13:57

Glaikit - I love Struan and Rory (would just go for the bog standard spelling as living in England). Also like Kirk and Keir However, DH feels the last two names are a step too far and sound made up as does Struan. Rory is my absolute and total favourite and is what I would call DS is it was just my choice. However, DH says that he hates the name which is making me Sad.

DH is now being annoying and saying that we can call him Jock as that is the most Scottish name there is and that he will need to wear a "See you, Jimmy" wig

Yellow - where abouts are you? I grew up on the west coast and then worked in Edinburgh. Quite a few Innes' in Edinburgh. I then moved to Aberdeen but none there. Maybe just an Edinburgh thing.

Fraser is nice too as is Alexander, thank you all for the suggestions.

yellowraincoat · 17/08/2012 14:02

I am in London these days, but yes, I lived in Aberdeen. It is a bit of an Edinburgh-sounding name, you're right.

Up in Aberdeen, it's all James and Martin and Peter and Scott. Plain.

This is the second thread today on which I've commented on my like for plain things. You can take the girl out of hardcore-ProtestantLand...

shinyblackgrape · 17/08/2012 14:04

Yellow - you've just made me Grin out loud!
