VALENTINE - what do you think?

Any honest opinions/associations are very welcome! We are French living in the UK and we are looking for a classical name that can be used in both countries (but not in the top 10 like Sophie or Isabelle). We nearly decided on Marguerite, but then we thought that she would have to spell out her name all the time.

No sorry, I don't like it...Valentina is nicer.

Pochemuchka · 16/08/2012 21:06

The only Valentine I know is a man.
Having said that, I actually quite like it for a girl.

HistoryNerd · 16/08/2012 21:10

My Great Grandfathers middle name was Valentine. I think its a very unusual mans name in the UK.

applepieinthesky · 16/08/2012 21:26

Valentina is nice. Not so sure about Valentine. I think I would assume it's a boys name.

Sophiesmummie · 16/08/2012 21:44

I like Valentine very much, also Valentina.

I know a male Valentin - it is becoming quite popular in Germany for boys.

Valentina is good. One of my customers is spanish and her daughter is called that. Don't like valentine for a girl

FuckityFuckFuck · 16/08/2012 21:49

You are right about Marguerite, my mother has been spelling it out for nearly 65 years now :o

Valentina is better than Valentine I think

Ambrosius · 16/08/2012 21:50

Its a boys name! Fabienne is very pretty andwould work in both languages :)

peeriebear · 16/08/2012 21:53

I'd assume the baby was a boy.

I like Valentina better and I agree Valentine seems a bit masculine in English (as is Constantine) although it is a perfectly nice name in France.

How about:
Violette
Adeline
Amelie
Eugenie
Astrid
Mathilde
Charlotte
Juliette
Leonie
Louise
Gwendoline
Elsa
Heloise
Alexandra

I like it. I would go Valentine rather than Valentina (as there just seems to be a trend for sticking an 'a' on the end of perfectly good names these days- having said that I have an 'a' name myself and do like them!!). I like the name for a boy (but sure he would get bullied!) but think it's more usable for a girl.

wildpoppy · 19/08/2012 21:40

I love love this but dh vetoed then we had a girl anyway.
I have met one the same age as dd though and it worked brilliantly.

mathanxiety · 20/08/2012 00:06

Valentine would be a boy's name in the UK (and would be pr Val-en-tyne)

BigHairyFlowers · 20/08/2012 00:13

Val Doonican. That is all.
