Lyra?

This is DH's favourite name ever. I'm a little unsure, it doesn't sound like a 'real' name to me and not sure if it goes with his surname. (Think golden arches - nothing much seems to go with it!) Other names I like are Violet (DH doesn't like), Clover (DH doesn't like) and Lila (DH doesn't like the spelling, he thinks it should be Lyla, which I think is tacky.) Any opinions/suggestions welcome please!

I love Lyra and loved the idea of calling DC2 Lyra if he hadn't turned out to be a boy.
But I'm not sure if I could have gone through with it. I remember being very worried that other people would accidentally say Liar.

InMySpareTime · 16/08/2012 09:04

Lyra is a real name, it is the name of the main character in the golden compass for one, I also know a toddler called Lyra.
If you're stuck on Lila/Lyla, how about Layla? I have known a few of those, but not recently.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 16/08/2012 09:07

Yup - being called Liar in school and people being weird about it are some of the main reasons I'm not sure about it. If I wasn't so worried about what other people thought I would probably pick it, which is bad I know... We don't know if we're having a girl or a boy yet, sorted for boy's names though.

Re His Dark Materials, we love the books so that's where DH found the name. I really don't like Layla, and think it sounds weird with DH's surname - sorry!

Perhaps Laura? Not seen a baby with that name for a while, it might be due a comeback.

MadBusLady · 16/08/2012 09:41

Lilya is very beautiful, Russia I think. Though she was probably get misspelled as Lily.

I love Lila though - where did your DH get "Lyla" from? I've never seen it spelt lie that. There's a character called Lila in Holiday Inn which is one of my favourite cheesy old movies. Isn't Kate Moss's daughter called Lila?

Layla is (I think) nicer spelt as Leila, but doesn't solve the sound problem.

nearlymumofone · 16/08/2012 09:42

I put a thread on here the other day about Lyra. Also considering it (it's one of the only names we agree on!). I was worried it sounded a bit made up too. Jury is still out for me. Out of interest what region are you in? I'm in London/Essex and concerned it might be a bit 'celeb' cool or something?

Frikadellen · 16/08/2012 10:10

I like it I think it is pretty

Ephiny · 16/08/2012 10:18

It is a real name, though personally I don't like the look/sound of it and it sounds too much like 'liar' (especially for kids who don't pronounce their r's well!)

Lyla is horrible. What about Leila or Lara? Or Viola instead of Violet?

StrawberrytallCAKE · 16/08/2012 11:48

I love Lyra because of the books but my dh has said no. I think Leila, Lana & Lola are also lovely.

CanoeSlalom · 16/08/2012 11:53

Larissa, with Lara for short?

BustleInYourHedgerow · 16/08/2012 16:19

Nearly - I'm in Ireland:) Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Buslady- I have asked DH where he got Lyla from and it's a character in a t.v. Programme. Upon further questioning and a little googling he has admitted it is a Very Silly Spelling Indeed. So it looks like it will be Lila Agnes (Agnes after my DM) if it is a girl:)

I like it but it does remind me of Lycra.

MadBusLady · 16/08/2012 16:40

Lila Agnes is lovely. Actually that's made me see "Agnes" in a whole new light. I looked up Kate Moss's and she is Lila Grace which sounds like a much more run-of-the-mill combination to me.

canistartagainplease · 16/08/2012 16:48

Lyra is nice, and probably "saved" from name calling by the books.
Btw, you can see the consellation lyra, in the summer night sky, in the northern hemisphere.

ExitPursuedByAGoldenBear · 16/08/2012 16:52

Was going to say it is a constellation but see can has beaten me to it. I think it is a lovely name.

MadBusLady · 16/08/2012 16:54

You mentioning being in Ireland makes me realise accents are important with names. When people were saying Lyra sounds a bit like liar I was Confused because they don't sound much like each other at all in my accent. I don't really sound the R in liar.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 16/08/2012 18:04

True accents are important! DS's name sounds terrible in a scottish accent, as I found out when relatives came to visit. Lila Agnes does sound nice, doesn't it? And DM has never particularly liked her name, she was appalled when I told her I've seen it mentioned as a nice name a few times on these forums. I hadn't thought about the KM thing, I'm not her biggest fan but it doesn't bother me, I'm just happy that we've settled on a name! It doesn't suit the surname particulary well, but then again, not much does, bar say Ronald...Grin

Lyra is beautiful, and the books are too. Go for it!

charlottehere · 16/08/2012 18:11

I love Lyra however I wouldn't use it, too much like liar. Sad

charlottehere · 16/08/2012 18:11

Same with Luna (tic)

TheEnglishWomanInTheAttic · 16/08/2012 18:44

Lyra doesn't sound like liar at all in my accent and i wouldn't have though of it, I like the name, but agree accents are important. Lila is nice though ... it means purple/ violet in German btw...

StrawberrytallCAKE · 16/08/2012 20:32

Ooh Lila is lovely.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 16/08/2012 21:07

aha! So I'm getting Violet after all, in a roundabout way. I'm tempted to tell DH now, but I think I'll wait until the birth has been registered. If it's a girl, that is.

charlottehere · 16/08/2012 21:39

Iona also means Violet in gaelic.
