Mae as a first name...?

Baby not due in May so would prefer to use spelling Mae.
I know many children have May/Mae as a middle name, but what do you think of it as a first?

I also love the name Vida but have had very negative feedback. Same with Juliet :(

What do you think of Mae Vida or Mae Juliet?

Gorgeous names, I like the spelling of it and both the middle names too though I've not heard of Vida before. Sounds lovely, like the name of a film star! Actually Mae Juliet sounds glamorous too.

MrGeresHamster · 12/08/2012 18:35

Mae is lovely.

Vida is Spanish for life. If you call her Mae Vida it will sound to Spanish people as 'My Life'... which is a bit odd.

Juliet is lovely too. Mae Juliet would be the better option. ...or Juliet Mae sounds nicer, but depends on surname.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2012 18:39

Mae is okay; I prefer Maeve. Don't like Vida.

StellaAndFries · 12/08/2012 18:45

I like Mae, one of my dd's has it in her name, I also like Juliet. Not as keen on Vida.

Yellowchair · 12/08/2012 19:20

Love Mae although always gets slated on mn.

justabigdisco · 12/08/2012 19:21

I don't understand the 'quirky' spelling, and you don't need to be born in May to be called May! In fact I think it's better if not born in May! Smile

justabigdisco · 12/08/2012 19:22

Oh and I think Juliet works better as a middle name. Lovely

ChunkysMum · 12/08/2012 20:25

Love Juliet as a first name (although don't like Julie or Jules)

I'm not greatly keen on Mae or Vida, sorry.

rachel234 · 13/08/2012 07:48

I prefer the spelling May. Also like Vida very much.

CharlieBoo · 13/08/2012 08:26

Prefer the spelling May... I think I would assume anyone called May, April or June were born in that month really but could just be me...

VolAuVent · 13/08/2012 10:00

Mae Juliet is a lovely combination. Nice to see Mae as a first name for a change.

imustbepatient · 13/08/2012 14:28

Another vote for Mae Juliet! Vida is lovely but following straight after Mae it just sounds like it is all one word (and maybe some sort of beauty product brand?!)

mrstowers · 14/08/2012 09:57

Mae/May is lovely as a first name. Although used to death as a middle name I haven't heard of any little girls with it as a first name. I do also adore Maeve.

firefly4400 · 15/08/2012 13:17

Mae is a gorgeous name. It's the middle name of lots of women in my family (although with the more original spelling - May) and I really don't see why it's often only considered as a middle name!

FelicitywasSarca · 15/08/2012 13:19

Mae is gorgeous. As is Juliet. Great choices.

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 15/08/2012 13:24

the Mae I know went through a phase of calling herself May as she was too shy to correct people on the spelling as a teenager. Lovely name, though!

PollyIndia · 15/08/2012 21:37

My niece is called Mei, pronounced May. Reason for the different spelling is her dad is Japanese and the name works in both languages.
I love the name but I am biased!

Leftwingharpie · 16/08/2012 18:40

Why on earth should it matter how it sounds to Spanish people? Confused

OP is Vida pronounced to rhyme with spider or feeder?

downbythewater · 16/08/2012 20:29

I love it- we were v tempted to use May for DD2 as a first name, as it is a family name. But it just didn't really fit with our surname. I like the Mae spelling for a first name (don't like it so much for a MN, not sure why!)

I would have used Maisy as a nickname, I think it's adorable on a toddler, but Mae is a lovely adult name.

WopBopALooBop · 16/08/2012 20:32

Love it :) would sound like she's from the Deep South which is lush :) Reading The Help at the minute and there's a gorge little girl in it called Mae.

WopBopALooBop · 16/08/2012 20:34

Much prefer it as a first name as is always used as the last bit of a hyphenated name (so sounds like a middle name) and seems unusual as a first name. also way prefer Mae, not sure why.

TellyBug · 16/08/2012 20:36

I prefer the spelling May and think it's a great name for someone born in May.

(I've said on another thread that January and July are also fab names for those born in J and J.)

LemonOCOGTurd · 16/08/2012 20:39

I much prefer it spelled 'May'.

Love Juliet.

exoticfruits · 16/08/2012 20:55

I prefer May.
Juliet May is lovely -but May Juliet works. (but not Mae)

sunnyday123 · 16/08/2012 21:10

May is so much classier than Mae- Lovely names always look chavvy when spelt funny, sorry
