I really would like a non frilly, crisp sounding girl's name? Am considering Maren or Marin? Any views appreciated, thanks.

It's lovely. Beautiful and strong. I'm not keen on very girly names or cutesy flower names. Not every girl is a girly girl. I know a Daisy who really couldn't be less of a Daisy if she tried!

How about:

Cara
Tressa
Nerys/Cerys
Bethan
Fern
Harriet
Faye
Rhona

Marin is a popular (and good quality)
make of bikes! My ds3 has one :)

Maren is ok.

My dd has a similar name, how are you pronouncing it?

Daya · 12/08/2012 15:16

I didn't know the bikes were very popular so that spelling is out, thanks 5madthings

Maren is maybe the more legit spelling, it seems to be a Norwegian name from my google research.

Does anyone know the correct pronunciation? I would like it to be Mah-ren with a short 'a' sound is that makes sense not Mar-rin.

I would read it as Mah-Ren. Maybe you you could spell it Marren with the extra R to help the phonetics?

5madthings · 12/08/2012 15:21

My dd is merryn which is cornish. We say it meh rin/mer rin.

I like maren with that pronunciation but we are quite often asked our dd's nsme people say mary?! or marion?! Confused So be prepared for having to correct people! :)

5madthings · 12/08/2012 15:22

i agree the extra r would work.

Daya · 12/08/2012 15:22

Thanks BlueSuedeStiletto, am pleased it reads Mah-ren. This is good - narrowing it down to Maren or Marren.

I really don't want a made up sounding name so am a bit paranoid of using a name that i'm not totally confident about its correct pronunciation .

its not made up but is a bit unusual so you will prob get questions. we get people mishearing it as i said. but its easy to correct and ee grt lots of compliments/positive comments about dd's name.

does it mean anything inparticular?

Daya · 12/08/2012 15:39

It means 'sea' or 'from the sea'. Merryn is lovely, I considered that and Muireann too. All very similar and could see how could get misheard a bit but can live with that.

merryn means joyful and lighthearted and also something to do with sea.

they are very similar and lovely names. getting misheard isnt a problem really, and everyone that knows us doesnt have a problem.

i like that they are a bit unusual as well :)

I like Marin, it's elegant and unusual. The only one I can think of in real life is Marin Alsop.

Not sure about the Mar(r)en spelling, that looks more 'made up' to me tbh.

Ephiny · 13/08/2012 10:45

Having said that I think Marin is considered a boy's name in some countries - with Marina being the feminine version - so may cause confusion. I think it's a pretty name for a girl personally though!
