Opinions needed on our possible girl's name - do your worst!

DH and I are team yellow. We've had a definite boy's name agreed almost from day 1 (Aulay Nathan Angus) -Nathan after his dad and Angus after my grandad and the area of scotland we had our first home in.

BUT we've been racking our brains for weeks and months trying to think of a girl's name that suited us. DH is an ulsterman and I'm a scot so would ideally love an ulsterscots name that reflects us, and DH came up with one tonight that I think I love, so here goes:

Caley-Rose Luna

Caley as in Caledonia, Rose after his late mum and Luna short for Lunanhead (town in Angus we had our cottage) and after the moon which plays a huge role in both of our lives being sailors.

Do your worst with opinions (on both biys and girls names) and any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It seems that you and DH have made up your minds and have chosen thoughtful names that mean a lot to you and your family. Use them and forget what other people think.

The only thing I'd ask is how is Caley pronounced? Is it Cay-ley or Ca-ley?

MissMummy1 · 11/08/2012 22:09

Cah-lee

Personally I'd spell it Cally I think.

I love that song Caledonia! I like the full name. Is it like Callay ?

RibenaHasLeftTheBuilding · 11/08/2012 22:11

Is Caley a known name, or have you created it from Caledonia? I only ask because I think people who don't know the origins might not pronounce in Cal-E (which I presume is how you want it pronounced?). I would guess you would get Kay-lee or Cal-lee a lot. Would it bother you correcting them? Would you mind your daughter having to?

I think Cal-E is quite cute. I'm not a big fan of the hyphen though. I think any hyphen with -Rose or -May/Mae is rather overdone at the moment and will date badly. I would just leave the separate - she can always be known by both even without a hyphen.

I love Angus. How do you pronounce Aulay?

toobreathless · 11/08/2012 22:11

Caley-Rose Luna:

Personally, I don't like hyphenated names. I also don't like Caley-sounds made up, sorry. What about Calista? Luna is very cool. If you must use Caley I would definitely spell it Callie.

Calista Rose Luna
Cassandra Rose Luna (Cassie-Rose is quite cute)

Aulay Nathan Angus:

Not 100% sure about Aulay, is it made up? (excuse my ignorance!) LOVE Nathan & Angus.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2012 22:12

Not overfond of hyphens, so would prefer the Caley and Rose to be separate but other than that I think it's nice.

Don't like Aulay though, sorry.

RibenaHasLeftTheBuilding · 11/08/2012 22:12

Sorry, cross posted. You would spell it Cally? That I would pronounce Cal-E. If you want the pronunciation Cah-Lee isn't it just spelt Carly?

RibenaHasLeftTheBuilding · 11/08/2012 22:13

Cross posted with others again. I like Callie.

MissMummy1 · 11/08/2012 22:16

Caledonia is a special song for us too. Caley/Cally however we spell it is a name in Scotland although not very common. I don't think I'd put the hyphen in actually and then that way it leaves the choice entirely with her!

Aulay is pronounced aw-lee (like Olly but as in MacAulay). Again it's another fairly uncommon ulsterscots name. One of the first ever kids I taught was an Aulay and he was adorable - probably one of the only kids I have taught I wouldn't mind my own child sharing a name with!

Love it but not sure about Luna. Isn't there a slightly off Harry potter character with that name?

RibenaHasLeftTheBuilding · 11/08/2012 22:21

Aulay is lovely in that case Smile.

Good call on the hyphen. If it is between Calley and Caley I would probably go with Cally just because of the lack of ambiguity on the pronunciation (although I think Caley actually looks prettier written down).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2012 22:21

Yes, Callie is probably a better spelling. Still don't like Aulay, sorry.

upsandowns · 11/08/2012 22:21

Sorry meant odd not off

HandMadeTail · 11/08/2012 22:27

Could you not use Caledonia as the name? (A bit like India)

I like Rose and Luna, but not the first name.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 11/08/2012 22:27

Callie is better.
Not the rose part, hyphens are a pain in the arse.

Three names is too much forgone child.

Save some names for the next child/goldfish/gerbil/tarantula.

Aulay is lovely, new on me.

HolyOlympicNamechangeBatman · 11/08/2012 22:44

I really like Callie-Rose actually, but it's been kind of ruined by the fact that hyphenated names have become so popular and often with a ridiculous/made up first name (I'm thinking Daizee-Lee, Milleey-Roze, Charley-Soo etc.)

I don't personally like Luna, it's a bit slebby I think.

I think you should use it though because it something you and DH love and it has meaning for you.

Aulay looks great written down but I don't like the sound, but that may be my accent, it's probably really nice in your accent. As long as you don't plan to move to London, I think use it.

LarkinSky · 12/08/2012 10:34

Aulay and Callie with Nathan Angus and Rose Luna as middle names sound lovely; unusual but not off the wall and completely pronounceable the world over. (You said Aulay sounds a little like Ollie, depending on the accent of the person saying it?)

I'm envious of you for finding names that resonate with meaning to your family and history, and also sound nice!

I like Luna very much; I presume J K Rowling chose it for a character in Harry Potter as she too lives in Scotland? Nevertheless, Luna is a minor character - and a positive one - so I wouldn't worry about that.

Luna is also Greek, isn't it, or Latin? Either way, very classical, and a great reference to yours and your DH's livelihoods on the sea.

LynetteScavo · 12/08/2012 10:37

All the names are lovely, but don't hyphenate.

twizzlestix · 12/08/2012 11:08

I love that your names hold so much meaning to you as a couple and think that your child will love being told (probably over and over) how you chose them and why. It's so much better than being told 'it sounded nice' etc.

Go for it!

badtime · 12/08/2012 11:19

I think spelling 'Caley' with a double-l will make the pronunciation clearer, so Cally, Calley or Callie (I prefer Callie of these). I also think that it would look better without the hyphen - you can still call her 'Callie Rose'.

Also whoever said 'Carly' was pronounced the right way, have a wee think about how Scottish and Northern Irish people pronounce the letter 'r'. Hmm

QuickQuickSloe · 12/08/2012 11:29

What does team yellow mean?

I think both your names are lovely but agree with you that dropping the horn would let her choose for herself.

Auley is adorable but also a good grown up name.

QuickQuickSloe · 12/08/2012 11:30

Dropping the horn???

hyphen

Stupid iPad!

TigerFeet · 12/08/2012 11:34

I would have pronounced Caley as Kayleigh. I'd go with Callie Rose Luna, no hyphen. Callie is lovely :)

Also wondering what team yellow is

starrynightskies · 12/08/2012 11:46

The girl in the Noughts and Crosses series by Malorie Blackman is called Callie Rose.

I would also spell it Callie as I would think Caley was pronounced Kayleigh, and it is a PITA having to correct people on how to pronounce your name all the time.
