Darla for a girl?

DS is called Evan, and it's a name I still absolutely love. I am now pregnant with DC2, we don't know what gender we're having (and won't be finding out).

What do you think of the name Darla for a girl?

DH suggested it, and I think I rather like it. He said no way to my suggestion of Claudia, although Clara is still in the running too.

If DC2 is a boy, we both like Connor (although a bit popular?), Lucien (a bit pretentious though?), and then we're stuck. I love Ellis, but it's too similar to Evan.

So I'd love some opinions on these names, and any suggestions of any others too!

Not keen on Darla.

Clara is better, do you like Carla, Cara, Cora? Other short girls names ending in a; Anita, Eliza, Fiona, Rhona, Shona.

Connor has been a popular boys name - peaked at 13th in 1998 but it's dropped to 44th now so he might not be one of many in his class and it goes well with Evan - bit of a Scottish theme.

I like Lucien but agree it could be considered a bit pretentious, though isn't there a young soap actor called Lucien something or other? It may gain in popularity and so become much more run of the mill.

You might like; Harvey, Harrison, Spencer, Finlay.

Darla. Hmmmm... It is not a patch on Clara, which is a beautiful, classic name. Darla makes me think of Daleks, trashy beauty pageants, and waitresses in vintage airstream diners - which now I've typed all that, actually seems rather cool, and retro...

Don't do it unless you're some kind of awesome rockabilly parents. Are you?

Darlas in popular culture are normally evil - theres a vampire Darla in Buffy, and remember reading a story (a comic book story actually) about an evil Darla as a child that really disturbed me - so am a little prejudiced against it, but not to say that your Darla wont be lovely of course!

GwennieF · 11/08/2012 09:52

Was Darla not one of the kids in theta American kids' programme from the 50's - Our Gang? She was brilliant! I think it's a lovely name.

CakeBump · 11/08/2012 09:55

I like darla, it's different without being too "out there". I also like Clara and lucien, and whilst lucien may veer towards pretentious I don't think it quite gets there... Smile

Connor is a naughty boys name in my book I'm afraid (teacher!)

Thanks for all your replies!

Badgerina Oddly enough, DH plays bass in a psychobilly band (cross between rockabilly and punk)!

I think one of the problems we have with girls' names is that our surname is May. It seems very popular at the moment to have a girl's name hyphenated with May, so I'm finding it hard to find a girl's name that doesn't sound too cutesy with our surname. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not for us).

I do love Fiona, but that's my sister's name, so can't use it.

Is Niall a naughty boy's name? I can't make my mind up. DH has been thinking about Lance and Bethany too, I'm not sure.

Argh, this was so much easier last time - we thought of Evan after the 12 week scan, both loved it so we went with it.

I think that names ending in -a or -ie flow more into May so would be more likely to sound hyphenated. Having said that, Darla and Clara sound fine to me. I'm not so keen on Connor or Lucien, but that might be just me!

If you wanted to have a hard consonant ending instead, how about:

Beatrix May; Evan and Bea/Trix
Charlotte May; Evan and Lottie
Juliet May; Evan and Jules
Rosalind May: Evan and Ros

Gerald May; Evan and Gerry
Patrick May; Evan and Patrick
Philip May; Evan and Phil
Richard May; Evan and Rich

Other Scots/Welsh names: Alastair, Bronwen, Campbell, Catriona, Cerys, Gareth, Hywel, Kirsten, Lachlan, Struan, Stuart

imustbepatient · 11/08/2012 13:12

Rather than Darla I would go with Carla or Cara. Could use Caroline and then cara or similar as a nn? Love the above suggestion of Juliet / Juliette too. Currently considering for DD2 so long as we can steer the nn away from Julie!

Badgerina · 11/08/2012 16:24

BionicEmu Well in that case, go for it! Darla May sounds awesome and clearly fits in with your music and stylistic background. If anyone could pull that name off it's the daughter of a musician who plays in a psychobilly band! Grin

Scarredbutnotbroken · 11/08/2012 16:26

I think Darla is fab

AndWhenYouGetThere · 11/08/2012 16:37

I much prefer Clara - fabulous.

My only contact with the name Darla was as the evil niece of the dentist in Finding Nemo (who kills the fish). Not a great association, but if I knew a nice Darla I'm sure I could be swayed!

LurkingPrincessLurkio · 12/08/2012 09:25

Love the name Darla! I've always thought it was a lovely name since watching the film 'Little Rascals' as a child. Not sure DP will go for it (when we start ttc) Sad but it's a very pretty name

Daya · 12/08/2012 09:44

Darla is ok, what about Dahlia? It's similar but more classic and imo nicer.

LarkinSky · 12/08/2012 10:18

I've never heard Darla before and quite like it.

Alternatively what about Dalia (Egyptian spelling) or Dahlia (English spelling with silent 'H')?

Sabriel · 12/08/2012 15:22

I wanted to call DD Darla. Mum and Dh both thought it had quite a harsh sound.

Emmielu · 12/08/2012 18:14

There's a little girl in the film little rascals called Darla. She's absolutely cute! It's a hilarious film too, I like darla may

RandomMess · 12/08/2012 18:15

Darla May = Darling buds of May to me!

Niall is an okay may.

susiedaisy · 12/08/2012 18:22

I like Darla, the only one I've ever heard of is out of the tv series buffy the vampire slayer!

littletomato · 13/08/2012 13:03

I prefer Daria - probably because of the TV series.
