yay or nay?

Want a name that's not too common and it's really growing on me.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
FelicitywasSarca · 10/08/2012 15:18

As a nickname for Hugh it's nice, cute even.

As a name in its own right? Hmm would have thought it might get annoying in adulthood.

DarrowbyEightFive · 10/08/2012 15:21

Nay. Ever heard of Huey, Duey and Looey? Do you really want your child to be associated with the nephews of a cartoon character?

katiecubs · 10/08/2012 15:24

Yep loved that cartoon! Louie is there too though - that's a pretty popular name now?

I guess every name has associations but i don't think once a child is known in their own right people even think of it. Also it's hardly a horrible association.

HappyCamel · 10/08/2012 15:25

Hugh, yes, Huey, no. It's not suitable for an adult, it's a good nn though.

HappyCamel · 10/08/2012 15:26

Louis is a French name, Louie is as made up as Duey.

Weenugget · 10/08/2012 15:32

" going to talk to Huey" is a way of saying going to be sick where I come from lol! Also makes me think of Huey louie and dewie! We're they Donald ducks nephews?

katiecubs · 10/08/2012 15:37

oh my gosh is it, never heard of that!! where do you come from and why is that associated with being sick?!

OP posts:
Badgerina · 10/08/2012 15:39

Yeah "Huey" is being sick isn't it?

Having says that Huey Morgan (BBC6 Music DJ and Fun Lovin' Criminals) is a DUDE. And... He's an adult. Called Huey.

Badgerina · 10/08/2012 15:41

Sorry katiecubs cross posted there. My dad is from Kent and went to university in Nottingham - he calls being sick "talking to Huey" - I think the idea is that HUEY!!! Sounds like puking. Confused

katiecubs · 10/08/2012 15:46

I don't mind Huey for an adult or the duck association but the sick association may well put me off! Overall getting a negative vide here, hmmm.

Henry is another i am thinking of - better? I actually don't know if i am having a boy but we have girls sorted already.

OP posts:
Abzs · 10/08/2012 15:48

Huey and Ralf - unfortunately both euphemisms (onomatopoeia) for being sick.

But as Badgerina says Huey Morgan is indeed a Dude.

katiecubs · 10/08/2012 15:51

Yep the Huey Morgan thing was the line i was thinking along....but if most people get sick or ducks first it's not so good lol.

OP posts:
katiecubs · 10/08/2012 15:52

Huey or Ralf, never heard of either for being sick! Am doing impressions of barfing in my head now but i can't quite get it myself - i think bleurghhhh works better ;)

Abzs · 10/08/2012 15:55

Why not Hugh? Or Huw, if Welsh? With Hughie/Huey as a nickname?

As said above, (IMO) Hugh would be better when grown up.

VolAuVent · 10/08/2012 16:00

Henry is a great name, and you can have Harry as nickname too.

marshmallowpies · 10/08/2012 16:07

Hugh (or Huw) is a cool name but Huey is a bit too nicknamey for me.

I used to like Huey from the FLCs but then he said all those nasty things about Lauren Laverne at the Sony awards & now I'm not so keen. He's not quite the cool laid back guy you might think he is!

Ham69 · 10/08/2012 16:13

Well I love Huey. I met a lovely little boy on a local park on several occasions with that name and wished I'd thought of it before DS came along! Yes, he's Donald Duck's nephew, but who cares? So's Louie and I know several of them and never make that association. My dad used to say 'calling for Huey' about being sick, but that really wouldn't bother me either. I used to say Ralph too, but when I hear of a little Ralph, I don't think about sick! Love Hugo and it's similar but slightly more unusual. And I think it's a cool name for an adult too! No-one will bat an eyelid because when he's grown up, he'll be surrounded by Alfies, Freddies, Archies and possibly the odd Bertie! I'd say go for it.

WithACherryOnTop · 10/08/2012 17:35

Hugh is great.Huey isn't.It makes me think of vomiting.

imustbepatient · 10/08/2012 17:43

I love Hugo too, and then you can use Huey / Hughie for a nickname but he can also use Hugh or Hugo when older. The more options the better the chance he will like his name as much as you do.

EmpireBiscuit · 10/08/2012 17:47

Yup, in central Scotland a Huey is being sick.

katiecubs · 10/08/2012 18:11

eeep very put off with the sick association, still i am on the south coast so about as far away as you can get from Scotland. Not so keen on Hugo or Hugh, sound a bit too posh for me.

I conclude that Huey will probably be a Nay - Thanks all!

CouthyMow · 10/08/2012 18:14

Why would you want to call your child something that is a slang word for vomit or spit?

CouthyMow · 10/08/2012 18:15

Vomit was my first thought and I live in North East Essex...

Badgerina · 10/08/2012 23:51

marshmallow that is SUCH a good point. Lauren is worth a million Huey Morgans, especially after his comments Angry

Hugo used to be a name I also thought was a bit posh, OP, but after seeing the film last Christmas, it's really grown on me. It's a very sweet name, and I think it grows well for a man too Smile

I think you should dwell on Hugo a bit more (and p'raps read the graphic novel, it's AWESOME)

poppy283 · 11/08/2012 11:17

What did he say about Lauren Laverne?!
