How is the name Paloma perceived in Spanish-speaking countries?

DH and I are strongly considering Paloma for our baby due next year, if a girl.

There have been some unexpected discoveries with other names I have liked in the past - like Uma meaning 'horse' in Japanese and Ramona being seen as a fishwife/peasant name in Spain.

I'm hoping that someone here can shed some light on how the name Paloma is perceived in Spanish-speaking countries seeing as it's the name of a bird. I can take some cues from Picasso, who named his daughter Paloma, but wanted to hear about anything I may not know, living in an English-speaking country.

Many thanks!

I have spent 3 years living in Spain, and have Spanish DH, so not quite expert but as far as I know it's a normal name. Noone I know in Spain has named their dd Paloma, so maybe it's not at the height of popularity there.. (Although the thing of giving your dc your own name is still pretty popular there.)

Thanks for the feedback :) Good to know... just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be as odd as naming your kid something like 'Chilli' would be here in Australia (yes I know one!).

no idea but I love it.

Really like it. I've no idea about perceptions of it though. It's a very unusual sounding, but very lovely name - I'm a bit Envy that you get to use it, actually Grin

We returned to the UK at the end of last year after living in Spain for 8 years. i certainly came across a few Palomas there, maybe 10/12 or so.

I love it.

Thanks all - I also just thought of Salma Hayek naming her daughter Valentina Paloma - that with Picasso is enough for me. Doesn't seem like there are any issues!

I'm half Spanish and lived in Spain for over 8 years after uni. I know several Palomas and it is a perfectly normal girl's name (it means "Dove"). No worries there... Your daughter won't have any issues with her name in Spain!
