Girls names of the Edwardian era

Still trying to find a middle name for DD...we've realised a lot of our favourites seem to be dating to the Edwardian era or thereabouts, names like Constance, Patience, Cicely, Pearl...

My great grandmother was one of 13 sisters born in this period all of whom had names beginning with M - Maud, Madge, Mabel, Mary, Melinda, Millicent, Martha...I can never remember them all!

Just wondered if anyone had any more to offer

Aren't all flower names typically Edwardian? I think there was a trend for horticultural names back then.

This website nameberry.com/ is awesome There are name lists such as 'pretty, vintage girls names' and that sort of thing.

Get mooching!

I like Constance (nn Connie) and also Clara. I think "virtue" names were popular then - if you like Patience how about Faith, Hope, Grace?

I knew 3 sisters at school called Faith, Hope and Patience - think this was a little too much of a good thing, rather like 13 sisters beginning with M - you can take a theme too far!

CecilyP · 07/08/2012 18:52

Was Gwendoline Edwardian? I like it anyway.

BubbaOne · 07/08/2012 18:56

I am thinking of Clara if bump is a girl. Hubbie and I are undecided on boys names.

CecilyP · 07/08/2012 18:58

Gwendoline was unusual in in 1900 but had caught on by about 1920.

BedHog · 07/08/2012 19:00

Mahala. I love this name and I can't understand why it didn't come back into popularity along with Ruby, Ava, Florence etc. In fact not many people nowadays seem to have heard of the name....

theTramp · 08/08/2012 09:55

I always rather liked Hope, Constance, Patience as names - despite somewhat bitter moralistic after taste. Hope is a particularly nice name I think.

Alice is a good Edwardian name.

BedHog · 09/08/2012 08:14

I don't know babyblabber, possibly, it sounds a bit Hawaiian I guess! I know it was a reasonably popular name in the early 20th century, but seems to have completely dropped off the radar now.

SorrelForbes · 09/08/2012 08:22

babyblabber close, you're thinking of Mahalo.

How can 'mahala' have been a reasonably popular name around 1900? If it had; when I was a child, there there would have been ladies around the age I am now with the name, but I have never heard of it.
