What do you think of January as a girl's name? Just toying with this if we do have a girl and if she was born in Jan as EDD is 30/1/13! Also what short versions of the name would you use apart from the obious Jan which i'm not a fan of!

If you like it, fine but personally think its weird!

FanjoPingpong · 07/08/2012 10:18

I think it's lovely.

Ham69 · 07/08/2012 10:31

Not keen as a first name, will definitely get shortened to Jan. I think using it as a middle name is a good idea though. My DB has a friend called Tuesday, and she married a Mr. Mundy. She took his name too!!

DiscoDomina · 07/08/2012 10:48

It looks like DH is quite sold on the idea of January for a DS! My latest idea is that she would have a J middle name- so could shorten to JJ as nickname. Thinking of Jessica but not sure it goes, my fave preference is January Jayne, but my DSD already has one middle name of Jane. So i'm not sure if i could get away with this even if it is spelt differently! Mind you doesn't George Foreman have five sons all called George Grin

I think it's too linked to January Jones now and that will date it. Also if your EDD is 30 Jan you will probably have a February

DiscoDomina · 07/08/2012 11:10

DH has said even if not born in January he would still like to use the name as that was edd an it being our wedding anniversary month!

It's horrible.

thisisyesterday · 07/08/2012 14:18

i think if you do that you will spend her entire life (as will she when older) with people saying "oh was she/were you born in January?"..."no"... "oh"

juneau · 07/08/2012 14:20

It's my least favourite month of the year, so no, not keen. Plus, I think naming a child after the month they're born is lazy. My SIL is called April for that reason and I just think it's rather lame.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 07/08/2012 14:22

I quite like it. Minerva sounds too much like a contraceptive for me!!

Iburntthecakes · 07/08/2012 15:01

I like it. Could you use Ann as a nn? Jan might stick though...

MrsRhettButler · 07/08/2012 15:05

Riri is a nice nn for January

It's not the worst name I've heard suggested on mumsnet, but not my favourite either. To my ears it just sounds a little harsh, and unlike others I quite like the month of January.

theTramp · 08/08/2012 10:01

I think January is a lovely name and if born in January, and with the significance of the month for you, a really great choice.

Unlike the myriad bah humbugs who spend January being peeved because they are on a Christmas come down, I think it is a great month. New year, new beginnings, new outlook and so on and so forth. February meanwhile - ugh.

cheapandchic · 08/08/2012 18:08

I just met a january the other day...first thing I thought was "really? thats your name? I love it! How cool! Never met one before."

I like it a lot actually.

TellyBug · 11/08/2012 00:23

I like it but only if she is born in January!

I knew a girl called July who was born in - you guessed it - July!

Each to their own.

l3mma · 19/08/2012 18:57

we were debating January for a middle name for a while for our lil bubs who will be born in January :) x

getthecakeready · 19/08/2012 19:19

there is an actress called that, so that is my first thought, but I guess in a few years no-one will really know that.. i kind of like it

would have a back up name if the baby is born in Feb though..

Cremolavelodrome · 19/08/2012 19:22

I really like it actually
Know a little boy called Auguste which I like v much too.

Fireandashes · 19/08/2012 19:59

As a name it's a bit meh; not the worst, not the best (love Jenara though, that's really pretty and unusual). Or, if you have any French connections - Genevieve, pronounced the French way (sorry my phone won't let me do accents), which is phonetically similar to Janvier.

Possible teasing around January - Sales - cheap?

mathanxiety · 20/08/2012 15:28

This is one of the silliest DH whims ever.

Please stick with your other names which are lovely and have the added attraction of being actual names.

twonker · 21/08/2012 00:10

Janus is the roman god that January is named after. I quite like that for a boy. Is the baby definitely a girl?

DiscoDomina · 21/08/2012 09:33

The sex of the baby shall remain unknow until d day! We are prob moving away from January- but it will stay on the list! I have come to the conclusion that i want to see our baby then make my mind up on a name, as long as we have a decent shortlist for boys and girls i think it will be fine! Smile
