Help! Totally devoid of girl's names

Bleak! We are already at week 35+5 and havent got anything remotely resembling a list of names. I have tried looking at all kinds of lists including the 5,000 names on the Office of National Statistics site and we cant agree on anything.

The names i love are Amy, Gwen, Caelyn...... But my husband doesnt like these. He is keen on Vivienne, which is lovely, but i just really dont like 'Viv' and it would be a pretty unavoidable nickname.

We are getting a bit desperate! Not sure what anyone can suggest, but ..... Did any of ou have this kind of impasse, and smash through it in an original way?

The other problem is that the surname is ghastly... Double barelled, three syllables, and very cumbersome. B-W initials. Sounds a bit like Bond-Watson, but not that. Finding anything to go with such a clunky surname just makes it even harder.

Emma, Emmy, Jennifer, Quinn, Seren, Lucy, Elsie, Elise, Erin, Asha, Aisling, Alice, Gemma, Ruth.

You need something quite short with a long, clunky surname, Vivienne, while beautiful may be a bit long, but you could just nn her Enna or something and ride it through that way? You seem to like vowel-y and Welsh/Celtic from your suggestions - try googling Welsh or Scottish girls names.

You also may just know her name when you see her!

Don't think you have to have a short name at all, think it is entirely upto you how long a name you choose. Whilst I do like Vivienne, I agree that Viv is pretty unavoidable. My DH liked Violet and I discounted it because I didn't like Vi. How many suggestions has he come up with? Just wondering as my DH was very good at vetoing names but not so good at suggesting them.

If he doesn't like your suggests you will have to discount them, sorry. Don't get too down about it though, I went into labour with DD not knowing she was a girl and having not agreed on a girls name. DH held her while I was in the 3rd stage and said what about Emmeline which was a name I loved, had suggested and he had vetoed!

We've got some pretty unusual names in our extended family including Venice, Suran, Satya and Denim. Any of those take your fancy? Smile.

try this website it gives you lists and also tells you names that are similar to a name you like. It helped us choose. Its an american site but I really like it.

nameberry.com/

so if you search viviennne it will come up with names that are similar or that others liked.

I like Vivienne but prefer the nn Vee.

MerryCosIWonaGold · 05/08/2012 20:16

Could have Vivi as a nn. Are you def having a girl? How about Claudia, Meredith or Nina?

conorsrockers · 05/08/2012 20:21

I always liked the names Darcy and Delilah. But I never had any little girls Sad

Gugglebum · 05/08/2012 20:34

I agree with a PP that even the vetoed names aren't necessarily done forever. I have 5 kids, and I can't tell you how many times I would mention a name during a pregnancy and have DH make a face and reject it, and then in a later pregnancy I'd bring it up again and he'd be all enthusiastic about it as though he had never heard it before! Your DH may be one of those who needs to see a real live person before him before he feels he can properly give her a name. Don't panic! Put together a short list you're both relatively ok with, and then maybe just see who she looks like once she's here. :)

I wish my daughter's father had loved the name Vivien. I wanted to call her that and he hated it. It is beautiful and elegant and a bit different without being weird. Amy is alright. Bit blah compared to Vivien. Gwen is awful. What was your other name? Go for Vivien!

Viviennemary · 05/08/2012 20:44

I must say I rather like the name Vivienne. Not of course that I'm prejudiced or anything like that. Grin I also like Violet, Iris, Veronica, Ruth, Pandora,

JiltedJohnsJulie · 05/08/2012 20:50

Grin at Vivienne.

How about Verity or Violetta

You have all been fantastic! Thanks sobmuch for all these tips. Youbare right London i do seem to love the celtic, vowelly names! I have been ogling google after your suggestion. My DH isnt that keen on the celtic route but we have a starting point now... And it is great to hear that being ruled out doesnt have to be permanent, though i really want it to be a name he loves.
