I used to love the name Sophie but a bit put off now as so popular. Also used to love Jessie (nn of Jessica) but can't use that now (family friend/ negative connations related).

So does anyone have any nice suggestions of similar type to Sophie/ jessica but perhaps not so popular at moment?

Also considering Hetty (nn of Henrietta) but not really sure about it.

Sophia is the obvious suggestion I guess - do you like that? Not sure how popular that is though...

Josephine feels like a bit of a mix between Sophie and Jessica (with Josie as nn) - seem to be suggesting this on lots of threads lately as I like it so much.

Jemima could be an alternative to Jessica too, or Jenna perhaps.

I think Laura is a similar 'style' to Sophie (maybe that is just me) and I really like it.

Good luck!

I have a Sophie and worried about it being so popular. In fact she is now three and I had a conversation for the first time with another Sophie's mum yesterday, and we both agreed that despite it's popularity we did not know many other children with that name. The lady's other dd was called Jessica and she said she knew far more Jessicas than Sophies (her Sophie is 11).

I did originally plan to use Sophia as I knew Sophie was so popular, then I went to rhyme time with ds1 and met two new baby Sophias less than a month old, and she was Sophie again!

Other Greek root names might be worth a look as well, names like Lydae and Helena are less common but still nice.

Jennifer, Juliet or Josephine would be good alts for Jessica, and in a similar style to Sophie. Of those three, Josephine is the less popularised.

Phoebe, Nathalie, Gloria, Georgianna/Georgina, Hester/Esther, Stephanie, Sienna, Frances, Francesca, Louisa are roughly similar in style to Sophie or Henrietta (also, both names in Jane Austin's Persuasion - maybe have a flick thought it and see if there are any other names in that that you might like, you obviously like the style)

By meaning, you could try Athene or Minerva.

Some other ideas: Nerissa, Anneka, Melissa, Portia, Hebe, Phoebe, Harriet, Clarissa, Pamela, Lyssa, Cecily, Jasmine?

Sophie and Jessica - kind of solid, British, 80s-00s popular names aren't they.

I have a Jessica and a Savannah. Savannah is same letter as Sophie but a different type of name I think.

Similar to Sophie in my mind would be:
Amy, Abigail, Annabelle, Bethany, Bryony, Charlotte, Chloe, Claire, Danielle, Eleanor, Emily, Erin, Fiona, Georgia, Hannah, Harriet, Isabel, Imogen, Jennifer, Joanna, Katherine, Laura, Lauren, Louise, Leah, Madeleine, Melissa, Nicole, Natalie, Natasha, Olivia, Rebecca, Rachel, Rosie, Sarah, Samantha, Stephanie, Victoria, Zoe.

I wonder about the popularity thing. Is the name popular where you live or are you just looking at the stats? If you love the name then I wouldn't discount it.

I have two DDs - one has a name in the top 5, the other has a name around 150th in the popularity listings. Guess which DD shares a name with another girl in her class?

FWIW I think Sophia is more popular where I live than Sophie...

VerityClinch · 05/08/2012 20:59

Do you like Francesca? DD is "Chessie" for short.

Ohmydarlin · 05/08/2012 21:14

Sylvie is a good alternative to Sophie I always think.

thanks for all the suggestions! I haven't looked at recent stats for Sophie - just noticed there seem to be loads at toddler groups I go to.

My ds has quite a popular name as well and find it a bit awkward sometimes as he's always looking round and getting confused if someone else is calling their dc with the same name. Just was hoping to avoid this sort of thing if pos with dd.

Another slightly odd consideration affecting my choice is I grew up with a lisp and just in case dd has one too would like to avoid names that would make it obvious, e.g. Hester even though I really love the name!
