Common as muck? Bible boys and Flower girls?

Every last person I know seems to be calling their sons Biblical names like Noah, and their girls flower names like Poppy,Daisy.

Anyone else experienced this?

There's an awful lot of Biblical names out there.

I just had a quick look at the top 100 boys names for 2010 - I counted 20, including 3 of the top 10 (Jacob, Thomas, James). And that wasn't counting Jack, Jamie, Ben and Zac which were originally nicknames for Biblical names.

But I've met plenty of little boys who don't have biblical names as well.

Flower names not so much. I only counted 9 out of the top 100 girls names as flower names there. And I don't think I've met a single little girl with a flower name. I know a 40 year old Rosie, but that's it.

What's your point? It's hardly your business what anyone else calls their child! What fabulous names have you come up with?!

Badgerina · 05/08/2012 00:31

I think it was merely an observation intended to spark discussion? Hmm

I tend to agree OP. I can't think of an explanation for it, but it does seem to be a bit of a naming trend.

scarlettsmummy2 · 05/08/2012 00:54

Def agree about the boys names, in my circle the most recent have been Elijah, Jeremiah, Seth, Jonah, Jacob, John, Mark, Thomas and James. I personally only like James and don't mind Thomas.

I had my second baby six months ago- a girl, but none of the six girls in the ante natal group had a flower name. (Abigail, Mirren, Erin, Kaiera, Olivia, Eriska and Florence)

I also know two Henrys born this year, and there are four Islas and three Alexis in my three year olds pre-prep class of twenty!

It's no great surprise. Biblical names are traditional, solid names and flower names very feminine and with beautiful connotations. Has been a trend for the past 10 years at least, or at least since dd1 Violet was born 6 years ago. Obviously I approve! However, I personally would avoid the top 100 names in a quest for something a little more unusual. Only met a couple of other little Violets in dd1's lifetime, and none in our immediate circle.

We have an Amos and an Elijah (5 and 9). We chose them because they are traditional, and (to us) the perfect combination of strong/masculine/soft/feminine in sound. Also they were not too popular when we chose them/
We also have dd 11 called Iris. So we have biblical and flower! Around here there are few Lily/Daisy/Rose names, but mostly things like Erin, Charlotte, Amelia, Beatrice.

LadyLetch · 05/08/2012 10:17

Totally agree. I know loads of children with these names...

Boys: Noah, Luke (x4), Isaac, Joshua (x2), Thomas (x4), Zachary, Matthew (x3), Samuel (x2), James (x3) Ben (x5), Gabriel, Joseph (x5), Jude, Michael, Reuben, Alexander (x3)...

I would say though, rather than there just being a fashion for Biblical names, the fashion is more for Old Testament names, as opposed to our generation who seemed to have more New Testament names (think Simon, Paul, John etc...)

Girls:
Daisy, Lily (x4), Poppy (x2), Ivy, Jasmine (x2), Rose (x3), Amaryllis, Fleur, Heather, Saffron (x2) ...

Nothing wrong with them as names, and certainly not 'common as muck' but not something I would choose to use myself.

pixiestix · 05/08/2012 11:24

Completely agree, with the addition of about 9 million Florences and Evas in our baby group.

Rainbowsurf · 05/08/2012 23:05

My kids are Daisy, Isaac, Poppy and Noah. It seems when ever I call their names half the kids in the playground/toddler groups/ SureStart all turn round and look at me as they all have the same names.
When Noah starts school (it is a very small local school with an intake of 15) 3 of his classmates will be called Noah! Poor teacher LOL

Don't take it personally rainbow, quite often threads about names are started intending to be nasty/rude etc.

Fwiw I love the name Noah, had no idea it was so popular and I'm desperate to use it if dc3 is a boy. If its a girl it will be Lily after my Grandma.

princelypurpleparrot · 05/08/2012 23:14

OP you wouldn't have guessed from your post that you had biblical and flower names tbh so it could possibly be seen by someone being very pinickity that you were being a bit rude about the trend!

Anyways, we've used two biblical names because they are nice, traditional and we like them. Where I live Theo seems be the name of the moment, I've met loads recently. (I'm embarrassed to admit that) I just looked on Wikipedia and it seems that it means "God" so there you go....!

princelypurpleparrot · 05/08/2012 23:16

And I should also say, DH and I both adore the name Isaac but there's already one in our family, and I love Noah, but DH not so much, So, good choices Smile

I have one of each Grin
