Wilbur?

Due date tomorrow and really can't decide on either name (don't know the sex). We did really like Wilbur as it's cute and more unusual than the boring William but you can still call him Wil when he grows up. But have read loads of negative responses to the name on internet threads so am worried - what do people think? He'll have the middle names James Victor and a sister called Emily

It's not a bad name but I think if you are worried then you should avoid it, would you feel comfortable saying 'Wilbur' when someone asks you his name? or would you say it and then be scanning their face for approval? and are you happy for him to tell people his name when he's old enough without worring he'll be teased?

DS has a name that is often disparaged, but it suits him, I like it, we tried other names on him and still liked it. Once they're grown into it it really doesn't matter I think.

If you like it, if it suits him (if the baby is a him), then go for it. People are called all sorts of crazy things and Wilbur is no-where near the top of the strange scale is it.

To be fair, it is bloody awful. He will get negative reactions. Look at him when he's born and imagine him being teased for it.

Wems · 02/08/2012 09:21

How is it "bloody awful" when Wilbur is not that different in sound to Oliver which is the most popular boys name at the moment?! Thanks for your "help" though lisaro

Much prefer William, which is a perennial classic.

shumway · 02/08/2012 11:43

I think it's lovely.

MidWeekSlump · 02/08/2012 11:50

Unless he is a baby pig who like to befriend spiders then no - choose Will if you want him called Will.

drtachyon · 02/08/2012 11:54

I don't like Wilbur very much - it makes me think of Charlotte's Web.

I much prefer William. Or you could just call him Will, if you want to use that nickname anyway.

evamummy · 02/08/2012 11:56

I think Wilbur is a lovely classic name.

William is very widely used already and isn't the point of naming someone to identify them. Wilbur will do a better job than the somewhat overused William imo.

But I'm not keen on any Wil/Will names because of the closeness with Willy and the inevitable teasing potential.

I do LOVE Victor though - why not use that as a first name?

PrunellaDeVille · 02/08/2012 12:00

love it, i'd use it if my best mate hadn't got a wilfred already - which could be another option - then he could be will or wilf or fred

WithACherryOnTop · 02/08/2012 12:58

Wilbur isn't at all nice imho. And I can't help thinking of the pig from Charlotte's Web.

LemonLovesLilac · 02/08/2012 14:45

I think Wilbur is a lovely name and I cannot see how a child may be bullied for it! If you live it go for it!

lisaro · 02/08/2012 17:35

You're welcome, though Wilbur sounds nothing like Oliver, which is a perfectly pleasant name. Confused

Ham69 · 02/08/2012 18:55

I love the name, always have done, and was on my short list for DS. Much prefer it to William and love the nn Will. If I were you I'd go for it! It's not the name that gets teased at school, it's the child. And how many made up ridiculous names will be in his class when he starts school? Go on, be brave!

IslaValargeone · 02/08/2012 19:01

I don't think Wilbur sounds anything like Oliver either Confused If you like it go with it.
Don't get your knickers in a twist though if you ask for opinions and you don't like what you hear.

MyTitsAreBetterThanYours · 02/08/2012 19:01

Wilbur is what my 5 year old calls his willy.

Don't do it

Olympicnmix · 02/08/2012 19:04

I love Wilbur, it's what one of my dcs gets called although it isn't his name. There are so many Wills/Williams these days that the teasing potential of 'Willy' is much muted.

Annals1989 · 02/08/2012 19:09

At the end of the day it's your baby so call him what you wish but please do think about his future. I think William is lovely and traditional Smile

rachel234 · 02/08/2012 21:32

I'm not keen on any Wil/Will names due to the Willy closeness.

Olympic, just because there are lots of them doesn't deter silly schoolboys to tease a Will by adding a y Grin.

rachel234 · 02/08/2012 21:33

I'm actually surprised why Will is so popular. I mean, it is a verb (I will), a noun (a last will) and one letter away from Willy!

Perhaps Prince William......

Catsmamma · 02/08/2012 21:34

Wilbur is a small pig, fact.

why not James Victor?

Madeyemoodysmum · 02/08/2012 22:57

Terrific and humble

scarlettsmummy2 · 02/08/2012 23:05

My brother used to also refer to a male body part as wilbur. I think it is ok but imagine that ten year old boys would find it amusing.
