Not heard any Helen's for about 20 years! Is it suitable for a baby or do you think everyone would think I was from the dark ages! Grin

how about helena?

MoreLithiumPlease · 30/07/2012 23:24

I think it's really nice!

letseatgrandma · 30/07/2012 23:25

Helen's what?

Sorry-couldn't resist!

I have taught KS1 for fourteen years and have never taught a Helen. Go for it-but obviously without any apostrophes ;)

A lovely classic name, of course it is suitable for a baby and your child will be an adult for an awful lot longer than they are a child for anyway.

Was top of our list for DD but in the end we decided another name suited her better. I love it. Helena also lovely.

IHeartKingThistle · 30/07/2012 23:30

I am 33 and I have 6 Helens in my phone of a similar age to me. They are all lovely. I think it's lovely and I think it would get a good reaction from people.

Weird really, when I think of all the other names from my generation - Nicola, Karen, Joanne etc. Helen seems less strongly attached to the age group than those do, despite how many I know!

NoComet · 30/07/2012 23:30

I can think of two, 14 and about 9

I am one. I would have preferred helena it's a little bit prettier.

It's not been a bad name though.

I am a Helen and I'm in my mid 20s. I used to think it was too old fashioned as I didn't know many Helens my age and I am named after my great aunt but now I really like it - I would love to meet a baby Helen. I say go for it!

roteelefant · 31/07/2012 00:14

I really like it

emmyloo2 · 31/07/2012 03:14

I love it. Absolute classic.

trikken · 31/07/2012 04:12

Love it. Great name

englishmummyinwales · 31/07/2012 07:26

I know a 6 yr old Helen. It's not much different from Ellen really, is it but there are lot more of those around. I think it's lovely.

HappyAsASandboy · 31/07/2012 07:43

I think it's a beautiful name :)

AlpinePony · 31/07/2012 07:51

Lovely!

VolAuVent · 31/07/2012 12:57

Lovely name.

WithACherryOnTop · 31/07/2012 13:08

I can't imagine calling Helen a baby, but not because it's old fashioned, but because it's ugly. It's not a very pleasant name at all imho, but then I'm not fond of any of the 'El' names.

Helen is definitely ripe for a revival. I think it's lovely.

birdofthenorth · 31/07/2012 14:29

Helen is lovely. Love Nell or Lennie as nicknames, although most of my generation go by Hels or the full version.

tammytoby · 31/07/2012 14:35

It is lovely. There is no 'rule' that a name has to be trendy/fashionable.

On the contrary, the less trendy names are the less overused ones and are more interesting imo.

hellymelly · 31/07/2012 14:40

I am a Helen, and I think its a classic name. I know of much older Helens than me, and in novels there are Helens from The Victorians on, so it isn't madly of an era in the way that a name like Julie is. Strangely I lived in London for decades and never met another one, but now I've moved back to Wales I know of 4 locally, all my age (40's) or older. I would have used it for DD if it hadn't been my own name.

Olympicnmix · 31/07/2012 14:41

No, it's beautiful
