Do you have or know a baby Percy?

This is for a friend.

She knows she is having a boy, and is very very concerned with picking something that is unusual. She wants him to have a name that no other child in his class will have.

She loves Percy, but would like to know how popular it is right now. She is worried that Percy is becoming more popular.

Do you have or know any baby Percys?

I love Percival but Percy will always be the wet engine from Thomas to me!

DawnOfTheDee, I'm now running through names in my head & laughing at 'Oooh Barry' etc etc Grin

DawnOfTheDee · 30/07/2012 20:59

'Take me Ptolemy!' Grin

My horrible uncle used to announce his visits to the loo by saying,' Just off to point Percy at the porcelain!!!'
That has put me off Percy permanently.

AWomanCalledHorse · 30/07/2012 21:04

'Ooh Lysander, that's the spot'.
Dammit TheDee you've ruined my (as yet unconceived) baby name list forever.

DawnOfTheDee · 30/07/2012 21:07

Sorry AWomanCalledHorse...! Grin

Though Lysander could have Xander as a nn...that's a bit 'hotter'

Big fans of the Percy Jackson series here, but it's still a terrible name.

MagdalenaAlec · 30/07/2012 21:25

My DN is Percival, often shorten to Percy, sometimes to Pers as well.

zxcv123 · 30/07/2012 21:29

I know of a baby Percy. Can't imagine it'll become very popular though, as in some parts of the country people will associate it with "point Percy at the porcelain" and snigger.

If she wants an unusual name she should just consider those of men currently aged 40. I've never come across a baby Phillip, Mark (though lots of Marcuses), Richard, Jeremy, Julian, Howard, Stuart, Paul, Gavin, Jonathan, Ian or Gareth.

DN is 3 btw, twin sister is Philippine

At some point in his life, this man will be an object of lustful yearning. Percy is NOT a name that conjures up such feeling (to my mind anyway). Yes, he could be a high court judge (the preferred Mumsnet occupation for prospective sons) but what use is that if he's not getting any? Percy is an extremely unflattering and terribly unsexy name. Startling to think this way about a baby? Perhaps, but he'll be a man for much longer. But never with a name like Percy.

FreelanceMama · 31/07/2012 03:06

picnicbasketcase There's a generation of women who'll always snigger at the name 'Ralph'!
Just remembered Lysander was 'The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous' and thought maybe your friend should check out Jilly Cooper novels for inspiration! I know a baby Cosmo...

Badgerina - I think you have now forever changed the way I will choose a name for my next son!! Very very good point. Some names are cute for a little chubby baby but not "sexy" for an adult man.

Now I have to re-think all my names....

I am also hoping my DS1's name isn't one that couldn't possibly be sexy. But I think it's ok.... Confused

lottiegb · 31/07/2012 04:31

I think there may be a mini trend for Persephone. Whether that's enough to make Percy widely known as a girl's name only, like Jocelyn, Evelyn, Lesley and Lindsay, I'm not sure.

Those would be one unusual boy names, though, at the moment, unusual names would be Paul, Simon, Michael or Stephen.

A friend's sister's little boy who's 2 is a Percy. It suits him.

I personally would have names on standby, as it might not suit him.

cakeismysaviour · 31/07/2012 17:51

FreelanceMama - I have recommended that book to her. Thank you.

I have also put the suggestions of Stephen, Mark etc to her, but she isn't keen.

I think she likes the 'old man' name trend, but doesn't want to use the same 'old man' name that lots of others are using.
