This is for a friend,

Suin is an uncommon Irish name.

For those that have come across it, can you confirm how it is pronounced. If you know the meaning that would be great.

Thanks

I knew one years ago and she called herself "shoo-un".

SummerRain · 03/08/2012 22:09

Whoops, didn't come back to this yesterday... Stoopid-phone must have autocorrected me Grin

Shue-un was what I was trying to say!

Could someone Irsh please start a thread on bames and their pronouncation, they are very interesting.

mamasin · 04/08/2012 15:43

I would pronounce it Shoon btw

Mama765 · 21/03/2017 15:42

Hi. With respect, this is actually incorrect. The 'iú' makes an 'oo ' or an 'ewe' sound as in siúl (walk) and siúcra (sugar) - even in Donegal Irish. Hence the correct pronunciation of Siún, based upon spelling alone, is 'Shoon' regardless of regional dialects.

If you were to reverse the 'iú' vowels e.g. úi as in Súin, the spelling, whilst incorrect, would be pronunced as 'Shoe-in') but that is not the correct spelling of this beautiful name.

Kind regards,
Múinteoir Gaeilge (Irish Teacher).

Mama765 · 21/03/2017 16:53

Just to clarify, I was replying to those who thought the name was not pronounced 'Shoon'. The reply mechanism on this forum seems to just tag you onto the end of a topic thread instead of to the particular post you want to address.

Hi. With respect, this is actually a zombie thread.

Nellyphants · 21/03/2017 19:28

Oops

Mama765 I think you're about 5 years too late to this discussion anyway, sorry.

Matriarch08 · 24/11/2018 19:45

It’s spelt Sùin & pronounced Soo-in.
She was an ancient queen of Ireland.
It’s my daughter-in-laws name. 🙂

RavenWings · 24/11/2018 23:01

A good point, but you're definitely too late to the discussion - the baby is long named by now!

AliCanTea · 25/11/2018 00:32

I was watching a programme set in the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, and there was a little girl with this name. Her parents and the nurses called her Shoo-un, sometimes sounding like Shoo-in. I'll see if I can find the episode but if you search Nurture Midwives on YouTube it's one of those.

AliCanTea · 25/11/2018 00:33

Oops, yes just seen it's a zombie thread Hmm

Matriarch08 · 29/10/2020 09:10

Siun & Suín are 2 different names.
Siun is pronounced Shoon.
Suín is pronounced Soo-in.
I know this because my daughter-in-law is called Suín - only person I know. 🙂

SeanCailleach · 29/10/2020 09:17

I'd read "Siún" as Shoon - one syllable, and guess it is "June". Pretty name.
Shoowan is how Donegal speakers say Siobhan.
